Career Coach Raleigh Durham NC · Resume Writing Raleigh-Durham runs on funded work. Ask what funds your role.

A great deal of the work here is paid for by a specific study, a contract award, or a grant cycle, which means the role has an end date whether or not anyone mentions it. Ask what funds the position and through when. It is a fair question, nobody is offended by it, and the answer changes how you should read the title, the security, and the number. Every document is built by a firm founded by a hiring executive with 2,500 placement decisions behind him.

Career coaching and resume writing, for a funded market.

Legacy Careers LLC provides career coaching and resume writing to professionals in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, and across the Research Triangle. The firm produces ATS-ready resumes, cover letters, match reports, LinkedIn profiles, and professional bios, and coaches clients through interviews, search strategy, networking, and salary negotiation. Documents run $149 to $749 and coaching programs run $549 to $2,497, with a $25 resume audit as the entry point. The work targets the employers actually hiring here: the contract research organisations that make this the densest clinical research cluster in the world, the biologics and pharmaceutical manufacturing plants across the southern and western counties, three research universities and the academic medical centres attached to them, the technology campuses and headquarters spread through the Park and out to Cary, the state government, banking, and professional services employers in the capital, and the semiconductor, electronics, and cleantech manufacturers around the region. Across completed engagements 87% of clients accept an offer, in 58 days on average, against an industry norm of 120 to 180 days. The bar every file clears was written on the hiring side across 2,500 placement decisions.

The firm is based in Houston and every engagement runs virtually. That changes nothing about the local work: the target list, the employer landscape, and the vocabulary in your documents are Triangle specific, and the first question here is usually which of the three kinds of life science employer you are actually aiming at, because they read the same record for different things. Deliverables and prices sit on resume writing services, session detail on career coaching programs, and employer seat pools on corporate outplacement.

The Sector Map

Who actually hires in the Triangle, and what each one reads for.

Six landscapes, and three of them are life sciences that read the same resume for entirely different things. Your document belongs to one of them at a time.

Contract research and pharma services

The densest concentration of clinical research organisations anywhere in the world sits in and around the Park, alongside laboratory services, data management, regulatory consulting, and commercialisation firms. These employers sell services, so panels read for study volume, therapeutic areas, sponsors served, timelines held, and whether you generated revenue or sat in overhead. Roles are frequently tied to a specific award, and understanding that before you accept is the difference between a career move and an eighteen-month detour. The sector also runs a well-worn internal ladder from monitoring into project management, medical writing, regulatory, and business development, and people rarely realise how portable their study experience is across those tracks until somebody points at it.

Biologics and pharmaceutical manufacturing

Large-scale drug substance, fill-finish, and vaccine manufacturing plants have been built across the southern and western counties over the past decade, alongside gene therapy and contract manufacturing sites. Panels read for GMP depth, batch record and deviation discipline, tech transfer, aseptic technique, and audit history. This is manufacturing rather than research, it runs shifts, and it takes strong regulated-industry operators from food, devices, and chemicals more readily than candidates expect. These sites also hire in waves tied to construction and licensure milestones, both of which are announced publicly, so a candidate paying attention can be in front of a plant before its hiring page fills up.

Universities and academic medicine

Three research universities and two academic health systems anchor this region and between them employ an enormous professional workforce beyond faculty: research administration, grants and contracts, clinical trials offices, technology transfer, facilities, and IT. Hiring runs on published bands, committee decisions, and grant cycles. Grants administration in particular is portfolio management with regulatory obligations attached, and the people doing it consistently describe it as paperwork. University employment here also carries benefits and tuition provisions that are genuinely valuable and almost never modelled when someone compares an academic offer against a CRO one on salary alone.

Technology

Enterprise software and open source, networking, hardware and personal computing headquarters, analytics, game development, and the engineering campuses national firms have kept in the Park for decades, plus a startup layer around the universities. Panels read for shipped product and technical depth rather than breadth. This sector hires nationally, which means the field for any posting includes relocations as well as the considerable local supply. It also draws heavily from the universities, so the entry-level end is competitive and the experienced end is thinner than the volume of applications suggests.

State government, banking, and professional services

This is a capital city, so state agencies, the university system office, and the courts are among the largest employers in the region, alongside a national bank headquartered here, insurance, law, accounting, and consulting. Public sector hiring runs on published schedules and a formal application process that is unforgiving of a private sector resume, and it is among the most stable employment in the Triangle. The published salary schedules also make preparation unusually straightforward: you can know the band before you apply, which is not true of any other employer type in this region.

Advanced manufacturing and cleantech

Semiconductor and power device manufacturing, electronics, batteries and vehicle supply chain, agricultural and construction equipment, and food production spread through the surrounding counties. Panels read for rate, yield, quality systems, supplier management, and safety record. This is where much of the region's recent industrial investment has gone, and it is largely invisible to candidates whose search radius stops at the Park. Pay here is competitive with the Park for technical and supervisory roles and the competition is a fraction of it, which makes the ratio one of the best in the region.

Compensation

What the Triangle pays for, and the question that comes first.

No salary table appears here. In this region the first question is not how much but what pays for it, because the answer determines the band, the security, and the whole shape of the negotiation. Six things decide what you can credibly ask for.

Your range is not a number you look up. It is a number you build from the roles you are actually pursuing, and then defend in a room with someone who already knows what the job is worth.
01

The range comes from your target list

It is assembled from your actual targets rather than looked up. The roles you are chasing, the level they genuinely sit at, and the employers you named. Here the spread runs on employer type more than title: a contract research organisation, a pharmaceutical sponsor, a university, a state agency, and a manufacturing plant price the same nominal role on five unrelated logics.

Built per client
02

Find out what funds the role, and through when

A permanently funded line, a grant with a defined cycle, a specific study, and a contract award are four different levels of security wearing the same job title. Ask directly what pays for the position, how long that funding runs, whether the role has converted before, and what happened to the last person in it. Nobody in this region finds that question rude, because everyone here has been on the wrong side of a study ending or an award being lost.

The whole offer
03

The expectations question comes early

You will be asked for a number before anyone describes the scope, and it is easy to answer badly here because the four employer types anchor so differently. A university salary quoted into a CRO conversation lands low, and a CRO figure quoted into a university one prices you out of a band that cannot move. Answer with structure rather than a single figure, and rehearse it in coaching before a recruiter asks.

Coaching · before the screen
04

Cost of living cuts both ways

This region is meaningfully cheaper than the Northeast or the West Coast and that is the argument every recruiter opens with when hiring you in. What it now leaves out is how fast housing has risen here over the past several years, particularly in the western suburbs where the schools drive demand. North Carolina also taxes income at a flat state rate, which is simpler to model than most places. Run the comparison on take-home against current local costs.

Relocation · both directions
05

The cycle sets the leverage

Several clocks run at once, and most of them are visible in advance. Contract research follows awards and study startups, which are announced. Manufacturing follows plant construction and product approvals, which are also announced. Universities follow grant cycles and the academic year. State agencies follow the legislative budget. Technology follows earnings. Reading award and approval news in your target sector is a genuine search strategy here rather than background interest.

Timing · honestly
06

The document sets the ceiling

The band is largely settled before anyone speaks to you. A panel forms its view in the top third of your resume and opens accordingly. In this region the expensive version is writing for the wrong employer type: a page built for a sponsor sent to a CRO reads as someone who has never carried billable work, and the same page sent to a university reads as someone with no funding record. The reader does not adjust for context.

Where it really starts

No salary figures are published on this page because we have no Triangle dataset we would stand behind, and because a contract-funded role and a permanently funded one are not comparable even at the same number. Ranges are built per client from live target roles.

The Map

Where the jobs actually sit, and what that costs you.

Three cities that share an airport and function as separate job markets, plus a ring of counties where the plants are. Which of the three you will genuinely commute to narrows the target list faster than anything else you can tell us.

Downtown Raleigh

State agencies, the courts, a national bank headquarters, law, accounting, technology, and the professional services around them. Hiring here splits sharply between the public sector, which runs published schedules and a formal process, and the private employers, which do not. Knowing which one you are applying to changes the document before it changes anything else. Downtown has also absorbed a great deal of new office space in recent years, which has pulled employers in from the suburbs and made this the fastest changing employment district in the region.

Research Triangle Park and Morrisville

Contract research organisations, pharmaceutical research campuses, technology and networking employers, and the corporate offices built around them. It is the geographic centre of the region and reachable from all three cities, which makes it the compromise location for two-career households and consequently the most competitive postings in the Triangle. It is also the one district where all three life science employer types are represented within a few miles, which makes it the natural place to test which of them your record actually fits.

Downtown Durham

Startups, biotech, technology, and the university and health system a few blocks away, concentrated in the converted tobacco warehouses and the blocks around them. Employers here are smaller, hiring chains are short, and referrals move faster than applications. It is also the most affordable of the three downtowns and the one that has changed most in a decade. Startup hiring here runs almost entirely on introductions, and the university connection means a warm route into most of these companies exists if you look for it.

Duke and the medical campus

An academic medical centre, a research university, clinical trials offices, and the institutes and cores around them. Credentialing and grant vocabulary screen before experience is read, and a large share of the roles are funded by specific awards with defined end dates. For anyone planning a move into industry, this is where most of that experience gets earned first. It is also the hardest place in the region to get a straight answer about funding, because the person hiring you often does not control the award, which is precisely why the question has to be asked explicitly.

Chapel Hill and Carrboro

A research university, a second academic health system, public health and pharmacy schools, and the research institutes attached to them. Hiring runs on the academic calendar and on grant cycles rather than quarters, and the pace surprises anyone arriving from a CRO. Commutes work from Durham and painfully from east Raleigh.

Cary, Apex, and Holly Springs

Analytics and software headquarters, game development, and the biologics manufacturing plants that have gone up across the southwest of the region. An unusual mix of desk work and plant work within a few miles, with very different hiring cultures. Housing here is the most sought after in the Triangle and the schools are the reason. The plants on this side hire technicians and operators continuously and train them, which makes it one of the few well-paid entry routes in the region that does not require a degree.

North Raleigh, Wake Forest, and the northern arc

Corporate offices, healthcare, distribution, and the residential growth that pulled all of it north. Employers here are mid-sized, hire faster than the Park campuses, and offer broader scope per title. Underapplied for by candidates who default their search to the middle of the region.

Johnston County and the southern ring

Pharmaceutical manufacturing at very large scale, distribution, and food production out through Clayton, Smithfield, and Garner. Shift work is standard and the differentials are real money that a base salary comparison misses. This is where a great deal of the region's best-paid non-degreed employment sits, and almost nobody searches for it from inside the Beltline.

Tell us the radius you will actually drive and the target list gets built inside it. A list full of roles you would decline is not a search, it is a way to feel busy while nothing moves.

The Local Read

How a Triangle panel reads you.

Five things that are true here specifically, in the order they hit your application.

  1. 1

The system reads you before a person does.

The universities, the health systems, the state agencies, and the large research organisations here all screen at volume before a person is involved, and the public sector systems rate you against posted qualifications rather than reading for potential. What fails is mechanical: layouts that scramble on parse, headings a parser does not recognise, dates read as blank, and keyword coverage that does not match the posting. Nobody tells you it happened. The public sector systems here are the strictest of the group: an omitted qualification is treated as an absence rather than an oversight, and a two-page private sector resume submitted into a state application is frequently rated below the cut before a human sees it.

    Gate one
  2. 2

Three life science employers, three different reads.

A contract research organisation wants study count, therapeutic areas, sponsors served, timelines held, and whether you were billable. A sponsor wants the molecule, the programme, the decisions you owned, and the outcome. A university wants funding secured, compliance held, and publications. The same person can satisfy any of the three and no single document satisfies all of them, which is why the first question here is always which one you are actually aiming at.

    Gate two
  3. 3

Funded work ends, and the page has to explain it.

Study completions, grant cycles, and lost contract recompetes end perfectly good jobs here every year, and a resume showing three roles in five years reads as instability to a reader outside this world and as an ordinary career to anyone inside it. Name the cause in one clause: study completed, award ended, grant cycle closed. It costs six words, it removes the only objection those dates raise, and it signals that you understand how this region actually works.

    Gate three
  4. 4

Credentials and clearance are applied before the read.

A clinical or nursing licence, a regulatory affairs certification, GMP or aseptic qualification, a clinical research credential, a PE stamp, a CPA, a PMP, or a specific quality certification is treated as a gate rather than as a credit. Each belongs where a scanner catches it in the first ten seconds with the status and dates stated. Across the manufacturing and research employers here a blank space is read as a no rather than as an omission.

    Gate four
  5. 5

Three cities, and most people search one.

Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill are twenty-five to forty minutes apart and function as separate job markets, with a fourth ring of counties where the plants are. Candidates routinely search whichever one they live in, which quietly removes entire employer types: state government at one end, academic medicine at another, biologics manufacturing to the south. Decide deliberately which of them are in, tell us, and let the target list cover a region rather than a postcode.

    Gate five

The Difference

Everyone says they write better resumes.
Here is what better looks like in the Triangle.

A Triangle panel settles two questions in about thirty seconds. What did this person actually carry, and will they fix the problem I am hiring for? Because three different kinds of employer here read the same record for different things, a third question decides it: is this resume written for us? Every bullet gets rebuilt for the reader it is actually going to.

Contract research · the CRO translation
What was sent

Clinical research associate supporting study startup, working with sites on regulatory documents and monitoring visits across assigned protocols.

What we wrote

Study Startup: Carried 30 sites across two oncology protocols for a top-ten sponsor, pulling first-patient-in forward against the contracted timeline by rebuilding the essential document workflow, and holding a fully billable schedule through a portfolio reassignment.

Why it works. Supporting startup and working with sites is what every clinical research resume in the Park says. Site count, therapeutic area, sponsor tier, a contracted milestone beaten with a named mechanism, and billability held are the specifics a CRO hiring manager screens on, because a services business is buying throughput against a contract rather than scientific interest.

Grants administration · portfolio management, not paperwork
What was sent

Research administrator responsible for preparing grant proposals, processing awards, and assisting faculty with sponsored project compliance.

What we wrote

Sponsored Programmes: Managed a portfolio of federal and foundation awards across a department of 30 investigators, moving proposal submission off the deadline cliff by rebuilding the internal review calendar, and closing an audit finding on effort reporting without a single award suspension.

Why it works. Preparing proposals and assisting faculty makes a compliance and portfolio job sound clerical, which is exactly why grants people get levelled below what they run. Portfolio scope, investigator count, a process fix with the failure it solved, and an audit finding closed are the facts that read as management, inside a university and outside one.

Biologics manufacturing · the plants down the road
What was sent

Manufacturing associate performing production operations in a GMP facility, following batch records and completing documentation per procedure.

What we wrote

Drug Substance Operations: Ran upstream operations on a commercial bioreactor suite across a rotating shift, executing the tech transfer of a new product into the train, and cutting deviation recurrence by rewriting the two batch record steps that generated most of them.

Why it works. Following batch records and completing documentation describes compliance with instructions, which is the floor in a GMP plant rather than an achievement. Scale and unit operation, shift structure, a tech transfer executed, and deviations reduced with a specific mechanism are what a biologics site screens on, and they also travel to any regulated manufacturer in the country.

Every rewrite above is built from facts the candidate already had. Nothing is invented, because in a region this concentrated the person interviewing you may well have worked the same protocol, the same award, or the same suite.

Before You Buy

Ten questions, answered for the Triangle.

Cost, speed, coverage across three cities, and the questions a funded research market asks that others do not.

Do you meet clients in person in Raleigh or Durham?

No. Every engagement runs virtually, which is simpler than crossing the Triangle at five in the afternoon. The standard is identical whether you are in downtown Raleigh, in the Park, over in Durham or Chapel Hill, or out in Johnston County. What is local is the target list, the employer landscape, and the vocabulary your documents are written in.

Does a Triangle resume actually need to be different?

The framework holds everywhere. What changes here is that three different kinds of life science employer sit within twenty miles of each other and read the same resume for three different things. A contract research organisation reads portfolio and billability, a sponsor reads programme ownership, and a university reads funding and publications. One document cannot satisfy all three.

What is the difference between working for a CRO and a sponsor?

Enough that your resume has to choose. A CRO sells services, so panels read for study volume, therapeutic areas, sponsors served, timelines held, and whether you were revenue-generating or overhead. A sponsor owns the molecule, so panels read for programme ownership, decisions made, and outcomes at a portfolio level. People cross between the two constantly here, and the crossing fails on language rather than on capability.

A lot of roles here seem to be contract or grant funded. Does that matter?

It matters a great deal and it is a fair thing to ask about. A role funded by a specific study, a contract award, or a grant cycle has an end date attached even when nobody says so. Ask what funds the position and through when, whether it converts, and what has happened to people in the role previously. None of that is rude. All of it changes how you should weigh the offer against a permanently funded one.

What does it cost, and how fast do I get it?

The $25 resume audit is the entry point and comes back as a written PDF inside 24 business hours. Documents are $149, $299, and $749. Coaching is $549, $1,197, and $2,497. Standard build is 3 to 5 business days and expedited is 1 to 2. Klarna and Afterpay are available at checkout on all of it.

How far out do you cover?

The Triangle and the ring: Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Cary, Apex, Morrisville, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina, Wake Forest, Knightdale, Wendell, Zebulon, Garner, Clayton, Smithfield, Hillsborough, Pittsboro, and Sanford. Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill function as three job markets, so tell us which of them you will genuinely commute to.

How do I work out what to ask for here?

By identifying what funds the role first, then building the number from your actual targets. A CRO prices against billable rate, a sponsor against a corporate band, a university against a published grade, and a state agency against a fixed schedule. Those are four different conversations, and quoting a figure from one into another is how people either price themselves out or land well below the band.

Who actually writes my documents?

A Legacy Careers writer working to a written standard rather than to taste, and nothing is released until someone who has genuinely made hiring decisions has read it against that standard. The firm operates from Houston, works with Triangle clients virtually, and was founded by an executive with 12+ years on the hiring side and 2,500+ placement calls behind him.

Is there a guarantee?

On every coaching program. Send 25 relevant applications inside sixty days without landing an interview and the work continues at no additional cost until interviews arrive. Document packages carry an edit window instead: 30 days on the standard tiers, 60 on the executive tier, with no revision count and no charge per round.

We are cutting roles in the Triangle. Do you handle the employer side?

Yes, priced separately. Employers hold a quarterly pool of transition seats from $650 a seat and refer people into it as needed. Anyone referred is working with a career expert inside three business days, and a utilization report arrives each quarter. Study completions and contract losses move whole teams in this region, which makes this a recurring need rather than an occasional one. The full economics are published on the outplacement page.

Coverage

The Triangle, and every other market.

Legacy Careers LLC provides career coaching and resume writing services to professionals in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, and across the Research Triangle, and in all 50 states. Triangle clients come from the contract research organisations and pharma services firms that make this the densest clinical research cluster in the world, from the biologics, vaccine, and gene therapy manufacturing plants across the southern and western counties, from three research universities and two academic health systems, from the technology campuses and headquarters through the Park and out to Cary, from the state agencies, the bank headquarters, and the professional services firms in the capital, and from the semiconductor, electronics, and cleantech manufacturers around the region. Documents are ATS-ready and written for one target role at one kind of employer, with a match report naming the titles a background genuinely reaches. Packages run $149 to $749, coaching $549 to $2,497, and the $25 audit returns a written PDF within 24 business hours.

Coverage spans Wake, Durham, Orange, Johnston, and Chatham counties. Two things shape a search here that appear on no other page in this set. Three different kinds of life science employer sit within twenty miles of each other and read the same resume for three different things, so the document has to choose its reader before it does anything else. And a great deal of the work is paid for by a specific study, award, or grant cycle, which means the role carries an end date whether or not anyone says so, and asking what funds it is the most useful question a candidate here can ask. The documents get built against a standard set on the hiring side across 2,500 placement decisions, and applied before anything is released.
