Career Coach Chicago IL · Resume Writing Chicago is two job markets. One resume will not cover both.

Downtown reads for pace, pedigree, and deal exposure. The suburbs read for ownership, stability, and the systems you actually ran. The same career genuinely supports both stories, but it has to be told twice, and sending one hybrid version into both markets is why strong candidates hear nothing back from either. Every document is built by a firm founded by a hiring executive with 2,500 placement decisions behind him.

Chicago, Illinois

Career coaching and resume writing, for both Chicagos.

Legacy Careers LLC provides career coaching and resume writing to professionals in Chicago, Illinois. The firm produces ATS-ready resumes, cover letters, match reports, LinkedIn profiles, and professional bios, and coaches clients through interviews, search strategy, networking, and salary negotiation. Documents run $149 to $749 and coaching programs run $549 to $2,497, with a $25 resume audit as the entry point. The work targets the employers actually hiring across Chicagoland: the trading firms, banks, and insurers in the Loop and the near west side, the rail, intermodal, and freight brokerage network that makes this the country's largest inland transportation hub, the academic medical centres and the pharmaceutical and device headquarters in Lake County, the manufacturing and food production base ringing the metro, the consulting, legal, and advertising firms downtown, and the technology corridor through Fulton Market. Across completed engagements 87% of clients accept an offer, in 58 days on average, against an industry norm of 120 to 180 days. The bar every file clears was written on the hiring side across 2,500 placement decisions.

The firm is based in Houston and every engagement runs virtually. That changes nothing about the local work: the target list, the employer landscape, and the vocabulary in your documents are Chicago specific, and the first question here is always which of the two markets you are actually pursuing. Deliverables and prices sit on resume writing services, session detail on career coaching programs, and employer seat pools on corporate outplacement.

The Sector Map

Who actually hires in Chicago, and what each one reads for.

Six landscapes, and no single one dominates the city. That sounds like an advantage and is not, because it means nobody here will translate your background for you.

Finance, trading, and insurance

Derivatives and options exchanges, proprietary trading and market making, asset management, commercial and private banking, and one of the largest insurance concentrations in the country out along the north and northwest corridors. Trading firms read for quantitative depth, latency and risk exposure, and what you owned on a desk. Insurance and banking read for regulatory literacy, named systems, and volume. Two very different documents, often applied for by the same candidate.

Transportation, rail, and freight

Every Class I railroad in the country meets here, alongside the intermodal yards southwest of the city, a global airport, and the largest freight brokerage and third-party logistics cluster in North America. The vocabulary is throughput and margin: loads covered, gross margin per load, on-time performance, dwell, carrier network size, headcount supervised. Brokerage in particular is a sales floor as much as a logistics operation, and the resume has to read as both.

Healthcare and life sciences

Several academic medical centres, large health systems across the city and the collar counties, a medical district on the near west side, and a pharmaceutical and medical device headquarters cluster up in Lake County. Hospitals read for licensure, regulatory vocabulary, and volume carried. The pharmaceutical and device employers read for regulated-industry experience, quality systems, and submission or trial exposure, which is a genuinely different filter.

Manufacturing and food production

Machining, metals, industrial equipment, packaging, and one of the deepest food and beverage manufacturing bases in the country, spread through the western and southern suburbs and northwest Indiana. Panels read for line and plant scale, quality standards, safety record, throughput, and certifications. Long tenure is read as reliability here rather than as stagnation, which is the opposite of how the same record reads to a downtown firm.

Professional services and consulting

Strategy and management consulting, the accounting firms, one of the largest legal markets in the country, advertising, and the staffing and advisory businesses attached to them. Pedigree carries real weight here and so does client exposure, but engagements and workstreams described in firm language read as invisible to a corporate panel. Translating that into owned outcomes is the single most common piece of work we do for Chicago clients.

Technology

Financial technology built on the trading base, logistics technology built on the freight base, enterprise software, healthcare technology, and the startup density around Fulton Market and the West Loop. Panels read for depth in a named stack and for what shipped rather than for breadth. Chicago technology hiring is less brand-driven than the coasts and more willing to take strong operators from the industries the city actually runs on.

Compensation

What Chicago pays for, and how your number gets built.

No salary table appears here. A metro average spanning a trading desk, a freight brokerage floor, a plant in the western suburbs, and a hospital describes none of them, and in this market bonus often decides the question anyway. Six things set what you can credibly ask for.

Your range is not a number you look up. It is a number you build from the roles you are actually pursuing, and then defend in a room with someone who already knows what the job is worth.
01

The range comes from your target list

It is assembled from your actual targets. The roles you are chasing, the level they truly sit at, and the employers you named. The downtown and suburban halves of this metro pay on different logics for the same title, so the first thing that has to be settled is which market you are pursuing, not what the job is called.

Built per client
02

Base is only part of the package here

In trading, consulting, and much of finance, discretionary bonus can carry more of the total than base does and is quoted as a target rather than a promise, so the questions that matter are how it has actually paid out and what it is measured against. Elsewhere the components change completely: commission and margin share in freight brokerage, shift differential in the plants and the hospitals, and equity at the technology employers.

The whole offer
03

The expectations question comes early

Recruiters here ask for a number quickly and the trading and consulting firms move fast once you give one. Answering blind sets your own ceiling before anyone has described the seat, and it is worse in this market because a base figure without a bonus structure attached is barely half the conversation. There is a way to answer that keeps you in the process, and it gets rehearsed in coaching first.

Coaching · before the screen
04

Cost of living cuts both ways

Chicago costs meaningfully less than New York or San Francisco for comparable finance and consulting work, and employers here use that comparison constantly to justify a lower figure. What rarely enters the conversation is the other side of the ledger: Illinois taxes income, property taxes across much of the metro are high, and a suburban commute carries a real annual cost in rail fares, parking, or fuel.

Relocation · both directions
05

The cycle sets the leverage

Several clocks run at once. Trading hiring follows volatility and volume. Consulting follows corporate spending and slows before anyone announces it. Freight follows the shipping cycle, which turns faster and harder than most people outside it expect. Manufacturing follows order books. Healthcare is steadier than any of them. Knowing which clock your target sector runs on tells you whether to push now or wait.

Timing · honestly
06

The document sets the ceiling

The band is largely settled before anyone speaks to you. A panel forms its view in the top third of your resume and opens accordingly. In this metro the fastest way to be read a level low is to send the wrong version: the suburban document downtown reads as slow, and the downtown document in the suburbs reads as transient.

Where it really starts

No salary figures are published on this page because we have no Chicago dataset we would stand behind. Ranges are built per client from live target roles. Placement rate and time to offer are measured across completed engagements and defined at the bottom of this page.

The Map

Where the jobs actually sit, and what that costs you.

Chicagoland is eight hiring pockets spread across five counties and stitched together by rail. Which one you can reach every morning, in February, decides more of your search than your experience does.

The Loop and the financial district

Exchanges, trading firms, banking, law, accounting, and city and county government. Transit access is the best in the country outside New York, which genuinely widens who can work here. Pace is the defining cultural signal: these employers read for whether you have operated somewhere fast, and a resume written in the measured language of a corporate campus reads as slow before anyone questions the substance.

West Loop and Fulton Market

Technology, advertising, a global restaurant headquarters, and the corporate offices that moved down from the suburbs to attract a younger candidate. Smaller teams, shorter hiring chains, and a strong preference for demonstrated ownership over title. This is also the most walkable employment district in the metro and the easiest to reach from every rail line.

River North and Streeterville

Advertising and media, hospitality, professional services, and a major academic medical centre with the research and administrative workforce attached. Two entirely different hiring cultures inside a few blocks, and candidates frequently apply across both without adjusting the document, which is exactly the mistake this metro punishes.

The Illinois Medical District and the near west side

Hospital campuses, a university medical centre, research, and the county health system. Credentialing and regulatory vocabulary screen before experience is read, and shift work is normal across a large share of these roles. It is also one of the better commutes in the city from both the west suburbs and the south side.

O'Hare, Rosemont, and the northwest suburbs

Aviation, logistics, insurance, and the corporate offices clustered around the airport and out along the northwest tollway. This corridor draws from a huge suburban radius and competes with downtown for the same candidates, usually winning on commute and losing on pace. Compensation philosophy here sits closer to national corporate norms than the Loop does.

The North Shore and Lake County

Pharmaceutical and medical device headquarters, insurance, and corporate campuses running up through Deerfield, Northbrook, and beyond. Regulated-industry experience is the currency, tenure is respected, and hiring cycles are slower and more deliberate. For anyone living north this is a far better radius than the Loop, and it is frequently overlooked by candidates who default their search to downtown.

The western suburbs: Naperville, Aurora, and Oak Brook

Telecommunications, technology, corporate headquarters, national laboratories, and a large professional population along the east-west corridor. This is suburban Chicago at its most corporate, and the resume that plays here is the ownership-and-stability version rather than the pace-and-pedigree one. Commutes inbound to the Loop are possible by rail and brutal by car.

The south and southwest: Joliet, Elwood, and the intermodal yards

Intermodal rail, distribution, fulfilment, and manufacturing at a scale most of the city never sees. This is the freight engine of the country and it is consistently underapplied for by candidates who never look past the collar counties. Shift work is standard and pay reflects it with differentials that a base-salary comparison misses entirely.

Tell us the radius you will actually drive and the target list gets built inside it. A list full of roles you would decline is not a search, it is a way to feel busy while nothing moves.

The Local Read

How a Chicago panel reads you.

Five things that are true here specifically, in the order they hit your application.

  1. 1

The system reads you before a person does.

The health systems, the insurers, and the large corporate employers here all screen at volume long before a person is involved. What fails is mechanical rather than a judgement about you: layouts that scramble on parse, headings a parser does not recognise, dates read as blank, and keyword coverage that does not match the requisition. Nobody tells you it happened, which is why the same fault keeps costing applications for months.

    Gate one
  2. 2

They can tell which market you wrote it for.

Downtown reads for pace, client or deal exposure, and pedigree. Suburban corporate and manufacturing employers read for ownership, systems run, and staying power. Send a hybrid into either and it reads as hedged. The same career supports both arguments honestly, but the emphasis, the ordering, and half the verbs have to change, which is why serious Chicago searches usually need two documents rather than one.

    Gate two
  3. 3

No industry dominates, so nobody translates for you.

In a one-industry city a panel fills in the gaps because everyone shares a vocabulary. Chicago has no such default. The person reading your resume is a specialist in their sector and a stranger to yours, and they will not work out that your freight experience is operations experience or that your consulting engagement was a supply chain rebuild. If the transfer is not stated on the page, it does not exist.

    Gate three
  4. 4

Credentials and clearance are applied before the read.

A CPA, a CFA, a Series licence, a PE stamp, a clinical licence, a PMP, or a quality or lean credential is treated as a filter rather than as a credit, and each belongs where a scanner catches it in the first ten seconds. If one has lapsed or is in progress, name it and name the date. In the regulated employers around this metro a blank space is read as a no rather than as an omission.

    Gate four
  5. 5

The commute question is really a retention question.

Managers here have watched good hires resign in their first winter over a commute that looked fine in September, and they screen for it. If you are applying across the metro, address it rather than hoping it is not noticed: name the line you would take, say you are relocating, or say plainly that you have made the drive before. Silence gets filled with the unfavourable assumption.

    Gate five

The Difference

Everyone says they write better resumes.
Here is what better looks like in Chicago.

A Chicago panel settles two questions in about thirty seconds. What did this person actually own, and will they fix the problem I am hiring for? In a city with no dominant industry, the reader is a specialist in their sector and a stranger to yours, so neither answer can be left implied. Every bullet gets rebuilt in the words that reader already uses.

Trade support · answering “where do they sit?”
What was sent

Operations analyst supporting the trading desk, resolving breaks and working with counterparties to ensure trades settled correctly.

What we wrote

Trade Support: Owned post-trade lifecycle for listed derivatives across two clearing relationships, clearing breaks before the margin cycle closed and rebuilding the give-up reconciliation that had been driving repeat exceptions.

Why it works. Supporting the desk is what everyone in operations writes, and it reads as junior no matter how senior the work was. Naming the product, the clearing relationships, the margin cycle, and a process rebuilt places the candidate exactly on the org chart a Chicago trading firm has in mind, and does it in the first line.

Freight brokerage · sales floor and operations at once
What was sent

Account manager at a logistics company, building customer relationships and coordinating with carriers to move freight on time.

What we wrote

Brokerage Operations: Grew a book to 90 loads a week across a carrier network built from scratch, holding gross margin through a soft freight market while keeping on-time delivery above the branch average.

Why it works. Building relationships and coordinating with carriers describes the job title, not the performance. Load volume, a carrier network you built, margin held through a down cycle, and on-time against a branch benchmark prove the two things a brokerage panel screens on at once: you can sell and you can operate.

Consulting · the Chicago translation
What was sent

Engagement manager leading workstreams for Fortune 500 clients, delivering recommendations to senior stakeholders across multiple industries.

What we wrote

Operations Transformation: Led a distribution network redesign for a national retailer, taking it from analysis through implementation across 14 sites and leaving a planning process the client still runs two years later.

Why it works. Workstreams, stakeholders, and recommendations are precise inside a firm and invisible to a corporate panel, which is why consultants stall when they try to leave. Naming the actual problem, the industry, the site count, and the thing still running afterwards converts an engagement into ownership, which is the only version a hiring manager can score.

Every rewrite above is built from facts the candidate already had. Nothing is invented, because in a market this networked the person interviewing you may well have worked the same desk, the same lane, or the same client.

Before You Buy

Ten questions, answered for Chicago.

Cost, speed, coverage across five counties, and the questions a two-market city asks that single-industry towns never do.

Do you meet clients in person in Chicago?

No. Every engagement runs virtually, which spares everyone a Metra ride and a February walk from the station. The standard is identical whether you are in the Loop, out in Naperville, or up on the North Shore. What is local is the target list, the employer landscape, and the vocabulary your documents are written in.

Does a Chicago resume actually need to be different?

More than most cities, because this is really two job markets. A trading firm in the Loop, a freight brokerage on the near west side, a pharmaceutical headquarters in Lake County, and a hospital system read for four unrelated things, and downtown and suburban employers value different signals entirely. Every document here targets one role at one kind of employer.

I am applying downtown and in the suburbs. Can one resume do both?

Not well. Downtown employers read for pace, pedigree, and deal or client exposure. Suburban corporate and manufacturing employers read for ownership, stability, and the systems you ran. The same experience genuinely supports both stories, but it has to be told twice. Sending one hybrid version into both markets is why strong candidates hear nothing from either.

Can you help me move out of finance or consulting?

Yes, and it is one of the most common requests here. Deal, client, and engagement skills transfer into corporate strategy, operations, product, and health system administration far better than most people leaving those firms believe. What blocks it is language: engagements and workstreams that mean everything inside the firm and nothing to a corporate panel. The match report names what your record already reaches.

What does it cost, and how fast do I get it?

The $25 resume audit is the entry point and comes back as a written PDF inside 24 business hours. Documents are $149, $299, and $749. Coaching is $549, $1,197, and $2,497. Standard build is 3 to 5 business days and expedited is 1 to 2. Klarna and Afterpay are available at checkout on all of it.

How far out do you cover?

Cook, DuPage, Lake, Will, and Kane counties: Evanston, Skokie, Oak Park, Cicero, Naperville, Aurora, Schaumburg, Arlington Heights, Des Plaines, Rosemont, Oak Brook, Deerfield, Northbrook, Elgin, Joliet, Orland Park, Tinley Park, Elmhurst, Lombard, and Bolingbrook. Tell us which Metra line or expressway you will genuinely use and the target list gets built around it.

How do I work out what to ask for, especially with bonus?

By valuing the whole package. In Chicago finance, trading, and consulting, discretionary bonus can carry more of the total than base does, and it is quoted as a target rather than a promise. Illinois also taxes income, which matters if you are comparing against an offer from Texas or Florida. We work from the roles you are chasing, the level they sit at, and what actually moves.

Who actually writes my documents?

A Legacy Careers writer working to a written standard rather than to taste, and nothing is released until someone who has genuinely made hiring decisions has read it against that standard. The firm operates from Houston, works with Chicago clients virtually, and was founded by an executive with 12+ years on the hiring side and 2,500+ placement calls behind him.

Is there a guarantee?

On every coaching program. Send 25 relevant applications inside sixty days without landing an interview and the work continues at no additional cost until interviews arrive. Document packages carry an edit window instead: 30 days on the standard tiers, 60 on the executive tier, with no revision count and no charge per round.

We are cutting roles in Chicago. Do you handle the employer side?

Yes, priced separately. Employers hold a quarterly pool of transition seats from $650 a seat and refer people into it as needed. Anyone referred is working with a career expert inside three business days, and a utilization report arrives each quarter. The full economics are published on the outplacement page.

Coverage

Chicago, and every other market.

Legacy Careers LLC provides career coaching and resume writing services to professionals in Chicago, Illinois, and in all 50 states. Chicago clients come from the exchanges, trading firms, banks, and insurers of the Loop and the near west side, from the rail, intermodal, and freight brokerage network that makes this the largest inland transportation hub in the country, from the academic medical centres and the pharmaceutical and device headquarters in Lake County, from the manufacturing and food production base ringing the metro, from the consulting, legal, and advertising firms downtown, and from the technology corridor through Fulton Market. Documents are ATS-ready and written for one target role at one kind of employer, with a match report naming the titles a background genuinely reaches. Packages run $149 to $749, coaching $549 to $2,497, and the $25 audit returns a written PDF within 24 business hours.

Coverage spans Cook, DuPage, Lake, Will, and Kane counties. The constraint that shapes a search here is not distance but direction: downtown and suburban employers want different things from the same career, and the rail network makes some cross-metro commutes easy and others impossible. So the first decision is which of the two Chicagos you are pursuing, and the documents get built from there. The standard behind them does not change from market to market, having been set on the hiring side across 2,500 placement decisions and applied to every file before release.
