Career Coach Austin TX · Resume Writing Austin has more good resumes than jobs. Yours has to do more.
This market absorbed a decade of hiring and then stopped, which means the posting you are looking at now draws a field three times stronger than it did in 2021. Listing the same tools as everyone else is no longer a resume, it is a tie. What separates candidates here is proof of ownership and outcome. Every document is built by a firm founded by a hiring executive with 2,500 placement decisions behind him.
Serving Travis, Williamson, Hays, Bastrop, and Caldwell counties: Round Rock, Cedar Park, Leander, Georgetown, Pflugerville, Hutto, Taylor, Buda, Kyle, San Marcos, Lakeway, Bee Cave, Dripping Springs, Manor, Del Valle, Bastrop, and Elgin. Delivered virtually.

Career coaching and resume writing, for a crowded market.
Legacy Careers LLC provides career coaching and resume writing to professionals in Austin, Texas. The firm produces ATS-ready resumes, cover letters, match reports, LinkedIn profiles, and professional bios, and coaches clients through interviews, search strategy, networking, and salary negotiation, including equity and offer valuation. Documents run $149 to $749 and coaching programs run $549 to $2,497, with a $25 resume audit as the entry point. The work targets the employers actually hiring across Central Texas: the software, hardware, and semiconductor employers spread from downtown to Williamson County, the state agencies and public sector around the Capitol, the universities and research institutions, the health systems and the medical school built alongside them, the music, film, and gaming industries the city is known for, and the manufacturing and construction boom serving all of it. Across completed engagements 87% of clients accept an offer, in 58 days on average, against an industry norm of 120 to 180 days. The bar every file clears was written on the hiring side across 2,500 placement decisions.
The firm is Texas based, in Houston, and every engagement runs virtually. None of that changes the local work: the target list, the employer landscape, and the vocabulary in your documents are Austin specific, and a public sector application here is a genuinely different document from a private sector one. Deliverables and prices sit on resume writing services, session detail on career coaching programs, and employer seat pools on corporate outplacement.
Four Austin situations. One of them is you.
Each one names the package and the price. The finder above reaches the same place in two taps.
I have nothing to put on a resume yet.
My resume looks like everyone else's now.
I can do the job. My documents do not say so.
I am not paying to guess again.
Letting people go instead of looking? Corporate outplacement is priced by the seat, from $650.
Who actually hires in Austin, and what each one reads for.
Six landscapes, and one of them does not even accept the same document as the other five. Your resume belongs to one of these, not to all six.
Technology and semiconductors
Software and SaaS, cloud and infrastructure, chip design and fabrication, electric vehicles, and the enterprise technology campuses that relocated or expanded here. Panels read for stage and scope before they read for stack: whether you have operated at seed, growth, or public-company scale, what you owned end to end, and what shipped. Listing frameworks is table stakes now, because in this field everyone lists the same ones. Ownership and outcome are the only differentiators left.
State government and the public sector
The Capitol, the agencies around it, the university system, the city and county, and the contractors, associations, and policy shops that serve them. This sector hires on a genuinely different mechanism: applications scored against posted qualifications, full employment history rather than a curated two pages, classification and salary schedules published in advance. It is stable, pensioned, and consistently overlooked by private-sector candidates who never learn how the door opens.
Higher education and research
A flagship university, a large state university down the corridor, community colleges, and the research institutes and technology transfer offices attached to them. Hiring runs far past faculty into research administration, IT, facilities, advancement, and student services. Committees rather than managers make these decisions, cycles are slower, and the documents are read more carefully and more literally than anywhere else in the metro.
Health systems
Several systems, a children's hospital, and a medical school built into the middle of the city, hiring well beyond clinical into revenue cycle, supply chain, informatics, quality, compliance, and research administration. Licensure and regulatory vocabulary screen first, then volume carried. This is also the steadiest sector in a metro that has learned how quickly technology hiring can stop, which is why it now attracts candidates who would never have looked at it three years ago.
Music, film, and gaming
Studios, production, live events and festivals, game development, and the marketing and creative agencies around them. Portfolio and shipped credits outweigh credentials here, and much of the work is project-based, which means a resume can look fragmented when the career was continuous. Naming the studio or production of record and grouping the work underneath it is usually the difference between reading as freelance and reading as senior.
Advanced manufacturing and construction
Fab construction and operation, electric vehicle assembly, suppliers, and the commercial and residential building machine trying to keep pace with the region's growth. Certifications are screening criteria: quality standards, cleanroom protocol, safety records, and trade licensure. This sector is hiring while parts of technology are not, and it takes transferable operations and project people from other industries more readily than most candidates expect.
What Austin pays for, and how your number gets built.
No salary table appears here, and in this metro a salary figure is barely half the question anyway. Private sector pay runs on equity and public sector pay runs on published schedules, which are almost opposite problems. Six things decide what you can credibly ask for.
Your range is not a number you look up. It is a number you build from the roles you are actually pursuing, and then defend in a room with someone who already knows what the job is worth.
The range comes from your target list
It gets assembled from your actual targets rather than looked up. The roles you are chasing, the level they genuinely sit at, and the employers you named. This metro has the widest internal spread in Texas: a seed-stage startup, a public technology company, a state agency, and a hospital system in the same city pay on four unrelated logics, and no local average reconciles them.
Built per clientBase is only part of the package here
Equity is the part people accept without asking about. Grant size means little without the vesting schedule, the refresh policy, the strike price, and honest information about the stage. At a public company it is a number you can value. At a startup it is a lottery ticket with a tax consequence. In the public sector the trade is the reverse: a lower published salary against a pension and stability that private employers cannot match.
The whole offerThe expectations question comes early
You will be asked for a number in an application field before anyone describes the level, and in a market this competitive an answer that is too high ends the process silently. There is a way to handle both the form and the recruiter call that keeps you in play without committing, and it gets built and rehearsed in coaching before you are put on the spot.
Coaching · before the screenCost of living cuts both ways
Texas takes no state income tax, and employers here use that constantly against candidates arriving from California and New York to justify a lower headline figure. Sometimes the arithmetic genuinely favours you. Often it stopped favouring you when Austin housing caught up. Run the comparison yourself, on take-home against actual local costs, before a recruiter runs a friendlier version of it for you.
Relocation · both directionsThe cycle sets the leverage
Several clocks run here and one is unique to this city. Technology hiring follows funding and earnings and has been restrained. Semiconductor demand follows fab construction and ramp schedules measured in years. Health and education are steadier than either. And the Texas Legislature sits every other year, which creates a genuine hiring and contracting rhythm for policy, agency, and association roles that exists nowhere else on this list.
Timing · honestlyThe document sets the ceiling
The band is largely settled before anyone speaks to you. A panel forms its view in the top third of your resume and opens accordingly. In a field this strong that judgement is made faster and less charitably than it was a few years ago, and a page that reads as a list of technologies gets placed at the level of someone who uses them rather than someone who owned the outcome.
Where it really startsNo salary figures are published on this page because we have no Austin dataset we would stand behind. Ranges are built per client from live target roles. Placement rate and time to offer are measured across completed engagements and defined at the bottom of this page.
See coaching programsWhere the jobs actually sit, and what that costs you.
Austin is small on a map and enormous in practice, split into eight hiring pockets by one river and one interstate. Which one you can reach every morning decides more of your search than your experience does.
Downtown, Rainey, and the Capitol complex
Technology headquarters, legal, finance, hospitality, and the state government apparatus sitting a few blocks from all of it. Two entirely different hiring cultures share the same square mile, and the documents that work in one are wrong in the other. Parking and traffic are genuine costs, and in-office expectations here run higher than at the campuses to the north.
The Domain and north Austin
The second downtown: corporate technology campuses, financial services, professional services, and the retail and residential density built around them. Compensation philosophy here often reflects the coastal markets these employers came from rather than local norms, which matters enormously when you are benchmarking yourself. Commutes work from Williamson County and from almost nowhere south of the river.
Northwest Austin and the 183 corridor
Semiconductors, hardware, established enterprise technology, and the engineering base that has been here since long before the recent boom. This corridor holds the deepest concentration of senior technical talent in the region and the longest tenures, which makes it both the hardest place to break into and the most stable place to land.
East Austin and Mueller
Startups, creative studios, agencies, healthcare at the redeveloped airport site, and the food and hospitality economy that grew alongside them. Employers are smaller, hiring chains are short, and a referral moves faster than an application. This is a relationship pocket, and searching it purely through job boards will badly understate what is actually available.
Southeast, the airport, and Del Valle
Electric vehicle manufacturing, aviation and cargo, logistics, and the industrial footprint that followed. This is where the region's manufacturing employment is concentrated and it is consistently underapplied for by candidates who set their search around downtown. Shift work is standard and pay reflects it with differentials a base comparison misses.
Round Rock, Pflugerville, and Georgetown
A major technology headquarters, semiconductors, healthcare, and the family suburbs that grew around them across Williamson County. For anyone living north this is a far better radius than downtown, and it is frequently ignored by people who moved here for the city and never adjusted their search to where they actually live.
Taylor, Hutto, and the eastern county
Large-scale semiconductor construction and operation, manufacturing, and the distribution footprint following it out along the highway. This is the newest employment district in the region and the least understood. Fab construction and ramp create long-horizon demand for trades, technicians, quality, and project people, and much of it is hiring from outside the industry.
South Austin, Buda, Kyle, and San Marcos
Healthcare, retail and distribution, a state university, and the commuter belt running down the corridor. Some people here genuinely have two metros open to them, and a resume aimed at San Antonio employers reads differently from one aimed at Austin technology. Decide which you are pursuing, or build two documents, because a page hedging between them convinces neither.
Tell us the radius you will actually drive and the target list gets built inside it. A list full of roles you would decline is not a search, it is a way to feel busy while nothing moves.
How an Austin panel reads you.
Five things that are true here specifically, in the order they hit your application.
-
1
The system reads you before a person does.
Technology employers here screen at volume, and the state application system is stricter still because it scores against posted qualifications almost literally. What fails is mechanical rather than a judgement about you: layouts that scramble on parse, headings a parser does not recognise, dates read as blank, and keyword coverage that does not match the posting. Nobody tells you it happened, which is why the same fault keeps costing applications for months.
Gate one -
2
They read company stage as a qualification.
In this market the question behind the question is whether you have operated at their stage. Someone who scaled a process at a public company often struggles at seed, and someone brilliant at seed can stall inside a mature organisation, and hiring managers here have watched both happen enough times to screen for it. State the stage explicitly: headcount, funding round or public status, and what the function looked like when you arrived versus when you left.
Gate two -
3
Everyone has the tools. Ownership is the differentiator.
A skills list of the same frameworks every other applicant lists is a tie, not an argument. What separates candidates now is what you owned end to end and what changed because you did: the system you took to production, the process you stood up, the metric that moved with a baseline attached, the team you grew. In the strongest applicant field this city has seen, that is the only part of the page doing real work.
Gate three -
4
A public sector application is a different document.
State agencies want full employment history rather than a curated two pages, they score against the qualifications exactly as written in the posting, and they use classification language that has to appear in your answers. Veterans preference applies and should be claimed. Sending a polished private-sector resume into that system is the most common reason strong candidates never hear back from the Capitol, and it is entirely fixable.
Gate four -
5
Half the panel moved here recently, so nothing is assumed.
This is a transplant city at every level, and the person reading your resume very likely arrived within the last five years. They will not recognise your previous employer, they will not know what your old title meant there, and no shared local network fills the gap. Everything that matters has to be stated on the page, because there is no local shorthand to lean on and no assumption of context to inherit.

Here is what better looks like in Austin.
An Austin panel settles two questions in about thirty seconds, and in a field this strong it settles them quickly and without charity. What did this person actually own, and will they fix the problem I am hiring for? A list of technologies answers neither. Every bullet gets rebuilt to answer one of them in the words the employer already uses.
Product manager responsible for the roadmap, working cross-functionally with engineering and design to deliver features on schedule.
Product Ownership: Owned a billing and provisioning surface through Series B to Series C, taking self-serve activation from concept to general availability and lifting conversion enough to change the company's onboarding model.
Why it works. Roadmap and cross-functionally appear on every product resume in this city, which makes them a tie rather than a claim. Naming the surface owned, the funding stage across which it was owned, the thing shipped, and the outcome that changed the business answers both the stage question and the ownership question in a single line.
Program specialist supporting agency initiatives, assisting with reporting requirements and coordinating with stakeholders.
Program Administration: Administered a statewide grant program across 40 subrecipients, carrying the reporting cycle to the federal funder, resolving monitoring findings to closure, and drafting the rule language adopted in the following cycle.
Why it works. Supporting and assisting are the two words that keep public sector careers stuck at the same classification for a decade. Subrecipient count, the reporting relationship, monitoring findings closed, and rule language adopted are precisely what an agency scoring panel is looking for, and they also translate the record outward if you ever want to leave the sector.
Process engineer in a fab, monitoring tool performance and troubleshooting issues to keep production running.
Process Engineering: Owned a photolithography module through a node transition, holding tool availability while cutting a recurring defect signature that had been capping yield, and qualifying two replacement tools without a line stoppage.
Why it works. Monitoring and troubleshooting describe attendance rather than ownership. Module owned, node transition, tool availability, a named defect mechanism reduced, and qualification without stopping the line are the four things a fab hiring manager screens on, and they are equally legible to any advanced manufacturer in the region now building here.
Every rewrite above is built from facts the candidate already had. Nothing is invented, because in a market this concentrated the person interviewing you may well have shipped against the same deadline or scored the same kind of application.
Get my $25 auditTen questions, answered for Austin.
Cost, speed, coverage across five counties, and the questions a technology and capital city asks that other markets never do.
Do you meet clients in person in Austin?
No. Every engagement runs virtually, which is simpler for everyone in a metro where a twelve-mile drive can take fifty minutes. The standard is identical whether you are downtown, up at the Domain, or out in Georgetown. What is local is the target list, the employer landscape, and the vocabulary your documents are written in.
Does an Austin resume actually need to be different?
The framework holds everywhere. The vocabulary does not. A software company at the Domain, a state agency near the Capitol, a semiconductor fab north of town, and a health system read for four unrelated things, and the public sector one is not even the same document. A page built to satisfy all four satisfies none, so every document targets one role at one kind of employer.
The tech market cooled. Is my resume the problem or the market?
Usually both, and only one of them is inside your control. Austin absorbed an enormous amount of technology hiring and then stopped, so the same posting now draws a far stronger field than it did three years ago. That does not make your experience worse. It means the page has to prove ownership and outcome rather than list tools, because everyone in the stack has the tools.
How do I apply for a state agency job? It seems like a different process.
It is a different process and it needs a different document. State applications are scored against the posting's stated qualifications almost literally, they want full employment history rather than a curated two pages, and specific classification language matters more than polish. Sending your private-sector resume into that system is the most common reason strong candidates never hear back from the Capitol.
What does it cost, and how fast do I get it?
The $25 resume audit is the entry point and comes back as a written PDF inside 24 business hours. Documents are $149, $299, and $749. Coaching is $549, $1,197, and $2,497. Standard build is 3 to 5 business days and expedited is 1 to 2. Klarna and Afterpay are available at checkout on all of it.
Which parts of Central Texas do you cover?
Travis, Williamson, Hays, Bastrop, and Caldwell counties: Round Rock, Cedar Park, Leander, Georgetown, Pflugerville, Hutto, Taylor, Buda, Kyle, San Marcos, Lakeway, Bee Cave, Dripping Springs, Manor, Del Valle, Bastrop, and Elgin. Some people down the corridor look toward San Antonio as well, which has its own page and its own employer landscape.
How do I work out what to ask for, especially with equity?
By valuing the whole offer rather than the headline. Austin runs on equity in the private sector and on published schedules in the public one, which are almost opposite problems. We work from the roles you are chasing, the level they truly sit at, and what actually moves: grant size and vesting, refresh policy, bonus target, and for a startup the stage and the strike price, which is the part people accept without ever asking about.
Who actually writes my documents?
A Legacy Careers writer working to a written standard rather than to taste, and nothing is released until someone who has genuinely made hiring decisions has read it against that standard. The firm operates from Houston, works with Austin clients virtually, and was founded by an executive with 12+ years on the hiring side and 2,500+ placement calls behind him.
Is there a guarantee?
On every coaching program. Send 25 relevant applications inside sixty days without landing an interview and the work continues at no additional cost until interviews arrive. Document packages carry an edit window instead: 30 days on the standard tiers, 60 on the executive tier, with no revision count and no charge per round.
We are cutting roles in Austin. Do you handle the employer side?
Yes, priced separately. Employers hold a quarterly pool of transition seats from $650 a seat and refer people into it as needed. Anyone referred is working with a career expert inside three business days, and a utilization report arrives each quarter. The full economics are published on the outplacement page.

Legacy Careers LLC provides career coaching and resume writing services to professionals in Austin, Texas, and in all 50 states. Austin clients come from the software, hardware, and semiconductor employers spread from downtown through north Austin and up into Williamson County, from the state agencies and public sector around the Capitol complex, from the universities and research institutions, from the health systems and the medical school alongside them, from the music, film, gaming, and creative industries the city is known for, and from the manufacturing and construction boom building for all of them. Public sector applications are treated as a separate document here, because that is what the state system requires. Documents are ATS-ready and written for one target role at one kind of employer, with a match report naming the titles a background genuinely reaches. Packages run $149 to $749, coaching $549 to $2,497, and the $25 audit returns a written PDF within 24 business hours.
Coverage spans Travis, Williamson, Hays, Bastrop, and Caldwell counties: Round Rock, Cedar Park, Leander, Georgetown, Pflugerville, Hutto, Taylor, Buda, Kyle, San Marcos, Lakeway, Bee Cave, Dripping Springs, Manor, Del Valle, Bastrop, and Elgin. Engagements run virtually from a Houston base. What differs between markets is the employer landscape a document aims at and the compensation structure behind the number you ask for, and in this market a large share of that number is equity rather than salary. What does not differ is the bar every file clears before release, written on the hiring side across 2,500 placement decisions.
