Career Coach Portland OR · Resume Writing Portland's job market got more crowded. Specifics are how you win it.
Two of the region's largest employers have made significant cuts, which means the queue you are standing in is full of people with backgrounds very like yours. A layoff carries no stigma here at all. Generic writing does. When a hundred similar resumes reach the same desk, the shortlist is decided by whoever put real numbers and named outcomes in the first third of the page. Every document is built by a firm founded by a hiring executive with 2,500 placement decisions behind him.

Career coaching and resume writing, for a crowded field.
Legacy Careers LLC provides career coaching and resume writing to professionals in Portland, Oregon and across the metro. The firm produces ATS-ready resumes, cover letters, match reports, LinkedIn profiles, and professional bios, and coaches clients through interviews, search strategy, networking, and salary negotiation. Documents run $149 to $749 and coaching programs run $549 to $2,497, with a $25 resume audit as the entry point. The work targets the employers actually hiring across this region: the semiconductor and hardware manufacturers spread through Washington County, the global athletic and outdoor brands and the product creation, design, and sourcing workforce built around them, the academic medical centre and the health systems, the metals, machinery, shipbuilding, and truck manufacturing along the river and out to the east, the software and technology employers downtown and on the east side, and the utilities, clean energy, public sector, and university employers serving all of it. Across completed engagements 87% of clients accept an offer, in 58 days on average, against an industry norm of 120 to 180 days. The bar every file clears was written on the hiring side across 2,500 placement decisions.
The firm is based in Houston and every engagement runs virtually. That changes nothing about the local work: the target list, the employer landscape, and the vocabulary in your documents are Portland specific, and the first question here is usually how to make a strong record read as distinct in a field full of people with the same employers on their page. Deliverables and prices sit on resume writing services, session detail on career coaching programs, and employer seat pools on corporate outplacement.
Four Portland situations. One of them is you.
Each one names the package and the price. The finder above reaches the same place in two taps.
I have nothing to put on a resume yet.
My resume is full of internal programme names.
I can do the job. My documents do not say so.
I am not paying to guess again.
Letting people go instead of looking? Corporate outplacement is priced by the seat, from $650.
Who actually hires in Portland, and what each one reads for.
Six landscapes, and two of them are large enough to set the tone for the whole region including how everyone else reads a resume. Your document belongs to one of them.
Semiconductors and hardware
The largest private employment block in the state sits in Washington County: chip fabrication and research at scale, equipment and materials suppliers, test and packaging, and the engineering base around them. Panels read for node, module, tool, and process specificity, yield and defect work, and cleanroom discipline. Depth beats breadth here more than anywhere else in the region, and a resume that lists equipment without saying what you moved is dismissed by people who have run the same tools themselves. The supplier and equipment companies alongside the fabs are a large employer in their own right and a far more open door than the fabs themselves, and they are routinely ignored by candidates fixed on one logo.
Athletic and outdoor brands
Two global athletic brands, an outdoor apparel headquarters, footwear and equipment companies, and one of the densest product creation workforces anywhere: design, development, materials, sourcing, merchandising, and brand marketing. The work runs on a seasonal calendar measured in years rather than quarters, and panels read for the products you actually shipped, the categories you carried, and the factory and cost outcomes behind them rather than for the campaign language. The supporting economy here is substantial too: independent design studios, materials suppliers, sourcing agencies, and the smaller outdoor brands that hire people trained at the two giants and give them wider scope.
Healthcare and academic medicine
An academic medical centre and research university, competing health systems across the metro, and a large integrated insurer and provider. Hiring runs far past clinical into revenue cycle, informatics, research administration, supply chain, quality, and compliance. Licensure and regulatory vocabulary screen first, then volume carried, and this remains the steadiest sector in a region where semiconductors and consumer brands both move hard with their cycles. It has also absorbed a meaningful share of the people displaced from those two industries, which makes it worth a serious look even from candidates who have never considered healthcare.
Manufacturing, metals, and transportation equipment
Heavy truck manufacturing and engineering, railcar and marine fabrication, specialty metals and castings, machinery, and food and beverage production, spread along the river and out through Clackamas and east county. Panels read for rate, quality systems, supplier management, and safety record. Long tenure reads as reliability across this sector, which is close to the opposite of how it reads at a consumer brand a few miles west. Engineering, supply chain, and quality roles here take strong people from semiconductors readily, because the disciplines transfer and the vocabulary is closer than either side assumes.
Software and technology
Enterprise software, developer tooling, open source, health technology, and the engineering and sales offices national companies keep here, concentrated downtown and on the central east side. Employers are smaller on average than the region's two giants, hiring chains are shorter, and scope per title is broader. They also absorb a steady flow of people leaving the large manufacturers, which makes them the most competitive small employers in the metro. What they cannot match is the compensation, and what they can offer instead is title and scope, which is the trade worth understanding before you start negotiating.
Clean energy, government, and higher education
Regional utilities and the federal power administration, renewable developers and grid services, state, county, and city government, and several universities and colleges. Hiring runs on published bands, committee panels, and budget years rather than on quarters. Sustainability and energy work in particular is a genuine career track here rather than a corporate side function, and it hires from engineering, policy, and operations backgrounds alike. These employers move slowly and post publicly, which makes them the most predictable part of the market and the easiest to plan a search around.
What Portland pays for, and why two employers set the anchor.
No salary table appears here. What this market has is two employers large enough to set the regional benchmark, and a great many people discovering the rest of the market does not match it. Six things decide what you can credibly ask for.
Your range is not a number you look up. It is a number you build from the roles you are actually pursuing, and then defend in a room with someone who already knows what the job is worth.
The range comes from your target list
It is assembled from your actual targets rather than looked up. The roles you are chasing, the level they genuinely sit at, and the employers you named. The spread here is wide for a metro this size: a chip manufacturer, a global brand, a health system, a truck plant, and a mid-sized software company pay on five unrelated logics for the same nominal title.
Built per clientTwo employers set the anchor, and most of the market sits below it
People leaving the region's two largest employers routinely benchmark against what they were paid there and stall for months, because the mid-sized employers absorbing them do not pay at that level and cannot be argued into it. That is worth knowing before the search rather than after four rejected offers. What often does close the gap is level: the same person frequently lands a title and a scope at a smaller company that would have taken years to reach inside a very large one.
The whole offerThe expectations question comes early
You will be asked for a number before anyone describes the scope, and anyone recently laid off is exposed twice over: once by a salary history set at a larger employer, and once by the pressure to take the first thing offered. Answering with what you earned last is how people either price themselves out or accept below their level. There is a way to hold the question open, and it gets built and rehearsed in coaching first.
Coaching · before the screenCost of living cuts both ways
Oregon taxes income and has no sales tax. Washington is the reverse, and the river between them is an ordinary commute. The Portland metro also carries local taxes above the state level. That means two identical offers on opposite banks do not land the same, and where you live and where you work are two separate financial decisions rather than one. Housing costs sit below Seattle and the Bay Area and well above the national picture, which is the argument recruiters use when hiring from either direction.
Relocation · both directionsThe cycle sets the leverage
Several clocks run at once. Semiconductor hiring follows capital investment and production ramps and moves on multi-year horizons. The consumer brands follow the seasonal product calendar and their own reorganisations. Manufacturing follows order books. Healthcare, utilities, and the public sector are steadier than any of them and are where a great deal of this region's recent hiring has quietly gone. Knowing which clock your target runs on tells you whether to push now or reposition.
Timing · honestlyThe document sets the ceiling
The band is largely settled before anyone speaks to you. A panel forms its view in the top third of your resume and opens accordingly. In a crowded field that judgement is made faster and revisited less, which means an unspecific page does not merely underperform, it disappears. The offer follows the level the page implied, and in this market the page has one screen to imply it.
Where it really startsNo salary figures are published on this page because we have no Portland dataset we would stand behind, and because the two largest employers here pay above the rest of the market, which makes a regional average misleading in both directions. Ranges are built per client from live target roles.
See coaching programsWhere the jobs actually sit, and what that costs you.
Eight hiring districts spread across two states and a river, from a chip corridor in the west to an industrial waterfront in the north. Which direction you will genuinely drive at eight in the morning decides more of your search than your experience does.
Downtown and the Pearl
Corporate offices, professional services, government, apparel and creative agencies, and a software layer spread through the older buildings. The most transit-connected part of the region and the one most affected by the shift to hybrid work, which has changed both who applies and how often anyone is expected in the building. Worth establishing on-site expectations before you accept anything here. Office vacancy has also pushed rents down enough that smaller employers have moved in, which quietly widened the range of companies hiring downtown.
The central east side and Lloyd
Design and advertising agencies, software, food and beverage production, and the small manufacturers that never left. Employers are small, hiring chains are short, and referrals move faster than applications almost every time. This is the most relationship-driven pocket in the city and the one job boards understate most. Titles here mean less than portfolios and referrals, and a candidate arriving from a large campus should expect scope to be broader and process to be almost nonexistent.
Hillsboro and the Silicon Forest
Chip fabrication and research at enormous scale, equipment and materials suppliers, and the engineering and technician workforce around them. A genuinely separate labour market with its own hiring rhythm tied to capital investment and production ramps, and one that runs shifts around the clock. The commute from the east side is the decision people underestimate every time. Compressed schedules are common and the differentials attached are real money that a base salary comparison misses.
Beaverton and Washington County
A global athletic brand headquarters, an outdoor apparel headquarters, and the product creation, sourcing, and marketing workforce built around both, alongside corporate offices and healthcare. This is where most of the region's brand and consumer product employment sits, and it draws applicants nationally, which makes it the most competitive corner of the metro. It is also where contract and fixed-term work is most common, and a run of contracts here reads as a normal career to anyone inside the industry and as instability to everyone outside it.
Marquam Hill and the South Waterfront
The academic medical centre, research institutes, teaching hospitals, and the biotech and health technology companies around them. Credentialing and research vocabulary screen before experience is read, shift work is standard across many roles, and it is the easiest part of the region to cross from a clinical or academic seat into industry.
Swan Island, the port, and north Portland
Truck manufacturing and engineering, shipbuilding and repair, marine and rail fabrication, distribution, and the industrial base along the river. Certifications and a clean safety record outweigh the school on your resume across most of this district. It is also one of the better ratios in the region, because far fewer candidates search the industrial waterfront than search the west side campuses.
Clackamas, Milwaukie, and the south metro
Manufacturing, distribution, healthcare, and the corporate offices out toward Wilsonville and Tualatin. Housing is more attainable than the west side and the commute inbound is the trade. Employers here are mid-sized and hire faster than the large campuses, which makes it a better ratio than most candidates assume.
Clark County: Vancouver, Camas, and Battle Ground
Semiconductors and electronics, healthcare, distribution, financial services back office, and the corporate offices that chose the north side of the river. A different state with a different tax structure, inside an ordinary commute, and a genuinely separate set of employers. Whether it is on your list is a decision worth making deliberately rather than by default.
Tell us the radius you will actually drive and the target list gets built inside it. A list full of roles you would decline is not a search, it is a way to feel busy while nothing moves.
How a Portland panel reads you.
Five things that are true here specifically, in the order they hit your application.
-
1
The system reads you before a person does.
The health systems, the large manufacturers, and the consumer brands here all screen at volume before a person is involved, and volume in this market currently means a very deep pile for every posting. What fails is mechanical rather than a judgement about you: layouts that scramble on parse, headings a parser does not recognise, dates read as blank, and keyword coverage that does not match the requisition. Nobody tells you it happened.
Gate one -
2
The field is strong, so generic loses quietly.
Large reductions at two major employers put a great many capable people into the same queue, most of them with similar employers and similar titles on the page. In that pile, competence is not a differentiator and seniority is not either. What separates a shortlist is specificity in the first third: the node, the category, the line, the yield, the revenue, the headcount. The layoff itself costs you nothing here. Writing like everyone else costs you the interview.
Gate two -
3
Mission alignment is a real screen here.
More than in most markets, employers in this region ask why this company rather than any company, and they are not making conversation. Sustainability commitments, product philosophy, community work, and public mission are read as genuine selection criteria at the brands, the utilities, the health systems, and the public sector alike. A cover letter that names something specific about the organisation beats one that names your own qualities, and candidates who treat that as soft lose to candidates who prepared it.
Gate three -
4
Credentials and clearance are applied before the read.
A clinical or nursing licence, a PE stamp, a quality or lean certification, a CDL, an electrical or welding qualification, a PMP, or a specific safety credential is treated as a gate rather than as a credit. Each belongs where a scanner catches it in the first ten seconds with the status and dates stated. Across the regulated and industrial employers here a blank space is read as a no rather than as an omission.
Gate four -
5
Internal language does not travel out of a big campus.
Very large employers generate their own vocabulary: programme names, internal grades, tool nicknames, and acronyms that carry enormous meaning inside the fence and none beyond it. A resume written that way reads as impenetrable to a mid-sized employer who would otherwise have hired you immediately. Translate every internal reference into the industry-standard term, and where a programme name is genuinely well known, say what it was as well as what it was called.

Here is what better looks like in Portland.
A Portland panel settles two questions in about thirty seconds. What did this person actually move, and will they fix the problem I am hiring for? In a field this crowded there is no second read and no benefit of the doubt, so every bullet gets rebuilt to answer one of the two in its first line, in the vocabulary that sector already uses.
Marketing manager responsible for developing and executing campaigns for a product category, collaborating with cross-functional partners and agencies.
Category Marketing: Owned the go-to-market for a footwear franchise across two seasons, growing sell-through at the top three wholesale accounts while cutting agency spend, and rebuilding the launch calendar after a supply delay moved a flagship style by six weeks.
Why it works. Developing and executing campaigns is on every marketing resume in Washington County, and in a crowded field it reads as a job title rather than a record. Franchise owned, seasons carried, sell-through at named account tiers, spend reduced, and a launch recovered after a supply failure are commercial outcomes, and the last one shows judgement when the plan broke.
Yield engineer supporting production, analysing data to identify defect sources and working with process teams on improvements.
Yield Engineering: Owned the defect Pareto on a high-volume product, driving a yield gain worth several million a quarter by isolating a tool-level signature nobody had attributed correctly, and holding the improvement through a subsequent process change.
Why it works. Analysing data and working with process teams describes the daily activity of several hundred engineers in this county. Ownership of the Pareto, a quantified yield gain, a root cause others had missed, and the improvement sustained afterward answer the only question a fab hiring manager has, which is whether you find things or merely report them.
Sustainability manager responsible for supporting the company's environmental goals and reporting on progress across the organisation.
Sustainability Programmes: Cut scope two emissions across eleven sites through an energy contract renegotiation and a metering rollout, built the supplier data collection that put reporting on an auditable footing, and delivered the disclosure that had previously been assembled by hand each year.
Why it works. Supporting goals and reporting on progress makes a genuine operations and finance job sound ceremonial, which is why sustainability people get read as advocates rather than as operators. Emissions reduced with named mechanisms, site count, auditable supplier data, and a disclosure delivered are programme outcomes, and they compete for operations and finance roles as well as sustainability ones.
Every rewrite above is built from facts the candidate already had. Nothing is invented, because in a region where two employers trained half the applicant pool, the person interviewing you may well have worked the same product, the same tool, or the same season.
Get my $25 auditTen questions, answered for Portland.
Cost, speed, coverage across two states, and the questions a crowded market asks that a hiring one does not.
Do you meet clients in person in Portland?
No. Every engagement runs virtually, which is simpler than crossing the river or driving out to Hillsboro at rush hour. The standard is identical whether you are downtown, in Washington County, out in Clackamas, or over in Vancouver. What is local is the target list, the employer landscape, and the vocabulary your documents are written in.
Does a Portland resume actually need to be different?
The framework holds everywhere. What changes here is that the applicant pool is unusually strong right now, because two of the region's largest employers have made significant cuts and those people are in the same queue as you. A semiconductor manufacturer, a global athletic brand, a health system, and a truck manufacturer also read for four different things, and none of them will infer what you meant.
I was laid off from one of the big employers. How does that read?
Carrying no stigma at all, provided you name the cause in one line. Everyone reading your resume here knows what happened and many of them have been through it themselves. What actually costs people is the opposite problem: a page written in the internal language of a very large company, full of programme names and acronyms that meant everything inside the building and nothing outside it.
Everyone I am competing against has the same background. How do I stand out?
With specifics rather than seniority. When a hundred people with similar experience apply for the same role, the shortlist is decided by who put numbers and named outcomes in the first third of the page. Not the tools you used, the node you worked on, the yield you moved, the line you launched, the revenue you carried. Generic competence is invisible in a strong field, and this field is strong.
What does it cost, and how fast do I get it?
The $25 resume audit is the entry point and comes back as a written PDF inside 24 business hours. Documents are $149, $299, and $749. Coaching is $549, $1,197, and $2,497. Standard build is 3 to 5 business days and expedited is 1 to 2. Klarna and Afterpay are available at checkout on all of it.
How far out do you cover?
The Portland metro and southwest Washington: Beaverton, Hillsboro, Forest Grove, Tigard, Tualatin, Sherwood, Wilsonville, Lake Oswego, West Linn, Oregon City, Milwaukie, Clackamas, Happy Valley, Gresham, Troutdale, and across the river to Vancouver, Camas, and Battle Ground. Whether Clark County is genuinely on your list is worth settling early, because it changes both the employers and the arithmetic.
Does living in Washington and working in Oregon actually help?
It depends on the direction and on your own situation, and it is worth working out rather than assuming. Oregon taxes income and has no sales tax. Washington is the reverse. The Portland metro also carries additional local taxes above the state level. Where you live and where you work are two separate decisions with real money attached, and two identical offers on either side of the river do not land the same.
Who actually writes my documents?
A Legacy Careers writer working to a written standard rather than to taste, and nothing is released until someone who has genuinely made hiring decisions has read it against that standard. The firm operates from Houston, works with Portland clients virtually, and was founded by an executive with 12+ years on the hiring side and 2,500+ placement calls behind him.
Is there a guarantee?
On every coaching program. Send 25 relevant applications inside sixty days without landing an interview and the work continues at no additional cost until interviews arrive. Document packages carry an edit window instead: 30 days on the standard tiers, 60 on the executive tier, with no revision count and no charge per round.
We are cutting roles in Portland. Do you handle the employer side?
Yes, priced separately. Employers hold a quarterly pool of transition seats from $650 a seat and refer people into it as needed. Anyone referred is working with a career expert inside three business days, and a utilization report arrives each quarter. This region has seen enough large reductions recently that how people are treated on the way out is widely known, which is worth weighing. The full economics are published on the outplacement page.
