Career Coach Columbus OH · Resume Writing Columbus is repricing. Your last salary here is a stale anchor.
Semiconductor, battery, and data centre investment is pulling wages upward across several sectors while the cost of living stays low. That means a figure you accepted three years ago is a reference point rather than a fair one, and plenty of candidates and a few employers are still using it. Build the number from live target roles instead. Every document is built by a firm founded by a hiring executive with 2,500 placement decisions behind him.

Career coaching and resume writing, for a market in motion.
Legacy Careers LLC provides career coaching and resume writing to professionals in Columbus, Ohio and across central Ohio. The firm produces ATS-ready resumes, cover letters, match reports, LinkedIn profiles, and professional bios, and coaches clients through interviews, search strategy, networking, and salary negotiation. Documents run $149 to $749 and coaching programs run $549 to $2,497, with a $25 resume audit as the entry point. The work targets the employers actually hiring here: the insurance carriers and banking operations that make this one of the largest financial services employment centres in the Midwest, the unusually dense cluster of retail and consumer brand headquarters, the distribution and air cargo network built on a location within a day of half the country, the hospital systems, the children's research hospital, and the private research institute, the semiconductor, automotive, battery, and data centre investment reshaping the counties around the city, and the university and state government employers downtown. Across completed engagements 87% of clients accept an offer, in 58 days on average, against an industry norm of 120 to 180 days. The bar every file clears was written on the hiring side across 2,500 placement decisions.
The firm is based in Houston and every engagement runs virtually. That changes nothing about the local work: the target list, the employer landscape, and the vocabulary in your documents are central Ohio specific, and the first thing worth settling here is what the roles you want actually pay now rather than what they paid when you last looked. Deliverables and prices sit on resume writing services, session detail on career coaching programs, and employer seat pools on corporate outplacement.
Four Columbus situations. One of them is you.
Each one names the package and the price. The finder above reaches the same place in two taps.
I have nothing to put on a resume yet.
My resume reads like the field. I want the HQ.
I can do the job. My documents do not say so.
I am not paying to guess again.
Letting people go instead of looking? Corporate outplacement is priced by the seat, from $650.
Who actually hires in Columbus, and what each one reads for.
Six landscapes, and one of them is arriving rather than established, which is why the local pay picture has stopped sitting still. Your resume belongs to one of these.
Insurance and financial services
A national insurance carrier headquartered here, several regional carriers, a bank holding company, a card and payments business, and one of the largest employment sites any major national bank operates outside its own headquarters. Panels screen for designations and licensing where they apply, regulatory literacy, named platforms, and volume handled. Actuarial, pricing, underwriting, claims, and risk are all deep local functions, and the internal ladders between them are the most reliable career path in the metro. These employers also run enormous technology and operations organisations, which means a software or analytics career here can be built entirely inside financial services without ever working for a technology company.
Retail and consumer headquarters
An unusually dense cluster of retail and consumer brand headquarters for a metro this size, across apparel, beauty, footwear, and value retail, plus the sourcing, design, merchandising, planning, and marketing organisations attached to them. Panels read for category or brand scope, unit economics, and vendor and channel work rather than for store performance. This sector also restructures periodically and in large groups, which is worth knowing when you weigh an offer against stability. The upside is that the local pool of experienced merchandising, planning, and sourcing people is deep and well connected, and a warm introduction inside it moves faster than any application will.
Logistics and distribution
A location within a day's drive of a very large share of the country's population produced an enormous distribution, fulfilment, and air cargo footprint, anchored by an inland port on the south side and the interstate corridors. The vocabulary is throughput: units moved, on-time performance, cost per unit, headcount supervised, safety record. Shift work is standard, differentials are real money, and site leadership earned here transfers into manufacturing and healthcare operations more readily than people expect. The corporate side of this sector is also substantial: network design, transportation procurement, and supply chain analytics all sit here and pay well above the floor of the warehouses they plan for.
Healthcare and contract research
Competing hospital systems, a university medical centre, a nationally known children's hospital with a substantial research arm, and a large private research institute doing contract work for government and industry. Licensure and regulatory vocabulary screen first, then volume carried. The research side is a genuinely distinctive employer here: applied science delivered to a sponsor on a contract, which reads differently from academic research and pays differently too. Clearance requirements gate a share of that work before experience is read, which is worth knowing before you apply and worth stating clearly if you already hold one.
Semiconductors, automotive, and data centres
Semiconductor fabrication under construction and ramp in the counties east of the city, automotive assembly and a battery joint venture to the north-west, the supplier base around both, and a data centre cluster that has drawn several of the largest technology companies in the world. This is the fastest changing part of the regional economy and it hires in waves tied to construction and commissioning milestones rather than to a steady plan. It is also pulling technical and skilled trades labour away from every other employer in the region, which is the single largest reason local pay in those functions has moved.
Higher education and state government
One of the largest universities in the country, a community college system, several private institutions, and the state agencies, legislature, and courts of a capital city. Hiring runs on published bands, committee decisions, and formal application processes that are unforgiving of a private sector resume. Between them these employers are the steadiest work in central Ohio and the least understood by candidates who have only worked in the corporate sector. Published pay schedules mean you can know the band before you apply, and university employment carries benefits and tuition provisions that are almost never modelled when someone compares an academic offer against a corporate one on salary alone.
What Columbus pays for, and why your old number is stale.
No salary table appears here, and in this metro a published average would be out of date before you read it. Several sectors have repriced over the past few years while the cost of living has not moved much. Six things decide what you can credibly ask for.
Your range is not a number you look up. It is a number you build from the roles you are actually pursuing, and then defend in a room with someone who already knows what the job is worth.
The range comes from your target list
It is assembled from your actual targets rather than looked up. The roles you are chasing, the level they genuinely sit at, and the employers you named. That matters more than usual here because the spread inside a single title has widened: an insurance carrier, a retail headquarters, a distribution centre, and a fab now pay very differently for people who would have been close a few years ago.
Built per clientYour own salary history is the worst anchor available
Wages in several sectors here have moved upward as semiconductor, battery, and data centre investment pulled on the same technical and operations labour everyone else needs. That means a figure you accepted three years ago is a historical fact rather than a fair reference, and quoting it prices you into the old market. Build the number from live target roles at named employers, and let the employer be the one working from stale data.
The whole offerThe expectations question comes early
You will be asked for a number before anyone describes the scope, and long-tenured candidates here are especially exposed because a salary built from years of internal increases sits below what the outside market now pays for the same work. So does anyone returning to the market after a few years away. There is a way to hold the question open long enough to learn what the seat is priced at, and it gets built and rehearsed in coaching first.
Coaching · before the screenCost of living cuts both ways
Housing here remains genuinely affordable by national standards and Ohio taxes income at moderate rates with local municipal taxes on top, which vary by where you live and work and are worth checking rather than assuming. That affordability is real and it is also the argument used to justify a lower offer to anyone relocating in. Run the comparison on take-home against actual local costs, and remember that a short commute in this metro is worth real money and real hours.
Relocation · both directionsThe cycle sets the leverage
Several clocks run at once and one of them is unusually visible. Large industrial projects hire in waves tied to construction, commissioning, and ramp milestones that are announced publicly, so you can see the next wave coming. Retail follows the seasonal calendar and restructures after it. Insurance follows renewal cycles. Distribution staffs hard into the autumn peak. Universities and state agencies follow budget years. Knowing which clock governs your target tells you when to be in front of it.
Timing · honestlyThe document sets the ceiling
The band is largely settled before anyone speaks to you. A panel forms its view in the top third of your resume and opens accordingly. In this metro the most expensive habit is writing a field or operational record for a headquarters role: a page describing one store, one branch, or one site gets sorted into a field band, and no amount of skill in the final conversation moves a candidate out of the band they were sorted into on the first read.
Where it really startsNo salary figures are published on this page because we have no Columbus dataset we would stand behind, and because a published average in a repricing market is out of date before anyone reads it. Ranges are built per client from live target roles.
See coaching programsWhere the jobs actually sit, and what that costs you.
Eight hiring districts arranged around one outerbelt, and the metro has spread further than most people's search radius has. Which quadrant you will genuinely commute to decides more of your search than your experience does.
Downtown, the Arena District, and the Short North
Insurance and banking headquarters, state agencies, law, and the corporate offices that have moved back into the core over the past decade. It is compact and increasingly walkable, and the commute from most of the metro is short by the standards of any comparable city. Hiring here is structured and multi-round, and the public sector employers a few blocks away run an entirely different process from the towers.
The campus and the University District
One of the largest universities in the country, a medical centre, research institutes, and the enormous administrative, facilities, and technology workforce behind them. Hiring runs on published bands, committee decisions, and the academic calendar, and the alumni network here functions as a genuine hiring channel across the entire metro in a way few universities manage.
Easton and the north-east
Retail and consumer brand headquarters, corporate offices, technology, and the hospitality and retail economy around the district. Employers here are mid-sized and hire faster than the downtown institutions, and scope per title tends to be broader. It is well positioned for anyone living north or east and awkward from the west side. The retail headquarters here also recruit nationally for merchandising and design roles, which means the field for those postings is larger than the local supply suggests.
New Albany and the eastern corporate corridor
Consumer brand headquarters, data centres at very large scale, technology, and the corporate campuses that chose the north-east quadrant. This district has grown faster than almost anywhere in the metro, and the data centre construction and operations work here is a large and quiet employer that almost nobody searches for by name. Facilities, critical environment, electrical, and mechanical roles at those sites pay well and hire continuously, and they take transferable experience from any industry that runs uptime-critical plant.
Licking County: Johnstown and Newark
Semiconductor fabrication under construction and ramp, the supplier and services layer forming around it, and the manufacturing and distribution base that was already there. Hiring moves in waves tied to construction and commissioning milestones. Housing is cheaper than the inner suburbs and the commute in from the east is straightforward, which is why so much of the workforce is moving that direction. The supplier and services layer forming around the fabs is where most of the eventual employment will sit, and it is easier to enter than the anchor sites themselves.
Dublin, Hilliard, and the north-west
Healthcare corporate offices, insurance, technology, and professional services across the western suburbs, plus a large research and technology campus. Long tenures, structured hiring, and compensation practice closer to national corporate norms than the rest of the metro. For anyone living west or north this is a far better radius than downtown. Healthcare corporate employment in particular is concentrated on this side of the metro and is frequently missed by clinical candidates who search only the hospital campuses.
Marysville, Delaware, and the north-west corridor
Automotive assembly at very large scale, a battery joint venture, and the supplier base spread across Union and Delaware counties. Certifications and a clean safety record outweigh the school on your resume across most of this corridor, and shift work is standard with differentials that a base salary comparison misses entirely.
Rickenbacker, Groveport, and the south
Air cargo, distribution and fulfilment at national scale, manufacturing, and the intermodal footprint on the south side. This is the least searched part of the metro relative to how much it hires, and peak season staffing here is a genuine entry route: people who run a strong peak are frequently kept and promoted faster than an office track would allow.
Tell us the radius you will actually drive and the target list gets built inside it. A list full of roles you would decline is not a search, it is a way to feel busy while nothing moves.
How a Columbus panel reads you.
Five things that are true here specifically, in the order they hit your application.
-
1
The system reads you before a person does.
The insurers, the hospital systems, the university, and every state agency here screen at volume before a person is involved, and the public sector systems rate you against posted qualifications rather than reading for potential. What fails is mechanical rather than a judgement about you: layouts that scramble on parse, headings a parser does not recognise, dates read as blank, and keyword coverage that does not match the requisition. Nobody tells you it happened.
Gate one -
2
The new plants hire on a construction timeline.
Large industrial projects do not post a steady stream of roles. They hire in waves: construction and trades first, then commissioning and equipment install, then production ramp, then the supplier and services layer that grows around the site. Each wave wants different people and each is preceded by public milestones. Reading those announcements tells you which wave is next and lets you be in front of it months before the postings appear, which is the cheapest advantage available in this metro.
Gate two -
3
Field experience does not transfer up by itself.
Running a store, a branch, or a site well is a real achievement and a headquarters panel does not read it as preparation for a corporate role unless the page makes the case. What they are buying is category or portfolio scope, analytical work, and influence across a network you did not manage directly. Most strong field candidates have done all three, in pilots, rollouts, district projects, and vendor work, and almost none of them put it above the location they ran.
Gate three -
4
Credentials and clearance are applied before the read.
An actuarial credential and the exams passed, an insurance designation, a clinical or nursing licence, a PE stamp, a CDL, a PMP, a quality or lean certification, or a clearance at the research and defense-adjacent employers is treated as a gate rather than as a credit. Each belongs where a scanner catches it in the first ten seconds with the status and dates stated. Exams in progress count here and should be named with the sitting date rather than left off.
Gate four -
5
Internal moves are the ladder, so show them.
The largest employers here promote and rotate internally over long careers, which means a great many strong candidates have one company on the page and five genuinely different jobs inside it. Written as a single block it reads as one static role. Break the tenure into the functions, the business units, the systems, and the leaders you worked under, and name what changed in each. Long service is an asset in this metro as long as the page proves movement inside it.

Here is what better looks like in Columbus.
A Columbus panel settles two questions in about thirty seconds. What did this person actually own, and will they fix the problem I am hiring for? For anyone moving from the field toward a headquarters, or from one sector into the ones arriving, neither answer is visible until the record is restated. Every bullet gets rebuilt to make ownership explicit.
Pricing analyst supporting rate reviews and profitability analysis for personal lines, working with underwriting and product teams on filings.
Product and Pricing: Owned the rate indication for a personal lines book across six states, carrying two filings through regulator objections without a rate cut, and rebuilding the segmentation that moved loss ratio in the worst-performing territory.
Why it works. Supporting rate reviews and working with teams describes proximity to the decision, which is exactly why analysts stall at the same grade for years. A book owned, states in scope, filings carried through objections, and a loss ratio moved with a named mechanism prove you set price rather than assisted someone who did, and that is the distinction every carrier here levels on.
Construction manager on a large industrial project, coordinating subcontractors and inspections and supporting the commissioning process.
Construction and Commissioning: Ran mechanical and process piping scope on a cleanroom build with 220 craft, holding the turnover schedule through a two-month equipment delay, and leading the systems handover that let commissioning start on the original date.
Why it works. Coordinating subcontractors and supporting commissioning is the generic version, and on a project this size it describes several hundred people. Scope, craft count, a cleanroom environment, a schedule protected through a named disruption, and a systems turnover delivered on date are what a project director screens on, because turnover is where fab projects actually fail.
Research scientist working on government-sponsored programmes, conducting experiments, analysing data, and contributing to technical reports.
Applied Research Delivery: Led a technical task on a multi-year government programme, delivering every milestone on schedule and within a funded budget, and carrying the prototype through the sponsor demonstration that secured the follow-on option year.
Why it works. Conducting experiments and contributing to reports is how academic work is described, and contract research is not academic work. Task leadership, milestones and funded budget, a demonstration passed, and an option year secured are the outcomes a sponsor-funded institute is judged on, and they read as programme delivery to a corporate employer as easily as to a research one.
Every rewrite above is built from facts the candidate already had. Nothing is invented, because in a metro where the same employers hire from each other for whole careers, the person interviewing you may well have worked the same book, the same project, or the same programme.
Get my $25 auditTen questions, answered for Columbus.
Cost, speed, coverage across central Ohio, and the questions a repricing market asks that a settled one does not.
Do you meet clients in person in Columbus?
No. Every engagement runs virtually, which is simpler than crossing the outerbelt at rush hour. The standard is identical whether you are downtown, out in Dublin or New Albany, up toward Marysville, or east in Licking County. What is local is the target list, the employer landscape, and the vocabulary your documents are written in.
Does a Columbus resume actually need to be different?
The framework holds everywhere. What changes here is that this metro is repricing itself. Semiconductor, battery, and data centre investment is pulling wages upward while the cost of living stays low, and a great many candidates are still anchored to what they earned here three years ago. An insurer, a retail headquarters, a distribution centre, and a fab also read for four unrelated things.
How do I time a search around the new plants?
By following the construction milestones, which are public. Large industrial projects hire in waves: construction first, then commissioning and equipment install, then production ramp, then the supplier and services layer that grows around them. Each wave wants different people. Watching announcements and permits tells you which wave is next and puts you in front of it months before the postings appear.
I have run stores or branches. Can I get into a headquarters here?
Yes, and this is one of the better metros in the country to try it, because the retail and insurance headquarters are unusually dense. What blocks it is that field experience does not transfer upward automatically: a corporate panel reads for category or portfolio scope, analytical work, and influence across a network rather than for running one location well. The record usually contains all three and the page almost never says so.
What does it cost, and how fast do I get it?
The $25 resume audit is the entry point and comes back as a written PDF inside 24 business hours. Documents are $149, $299, and $749. Coaching is $549, $1,197, and $2,497. Standard build is 3 to 5 business days and expedited is 1 to 2. Klarna and Afterpay are available at checkout on all of it.
How far out do you cover?
Central Ohio: Dublin, Powell, Worthington, Westerville, Delaware, Hilliard, Gahanna, New Albany, Reynoldsburg, Pickerington, Canal Winchester, Groveport, Obetz, Grove City, London, Marysville, Newark, and Lancaster. Tell us which quadrant of the outerbelt you will genuinely commute to, because the metro has spread further than most search radii have.
How do I work out what to ask for in a market that is moving?
By refusing to anchor on your own history. Local bands have moved upward in several sectors over the past few years, and your last salary here is a stale reference point rather than a fair one. Build the number from live target roles at the employers you actually named, and remember that a low cost of living makes the same salary go considerably further here than in most of the markets competing for you.
Who actually writes my documents?
A Legacy Careers writer working to a written standard rather than to taste, and nothing is released until someone who has genuinely made hiring decisions has read it against that standard. The firm operates from Houston, works with Columbus clients virtually, and was founded by an executive with 12+ years on the hiring side and 2,500+ placement calls behind him.
Is there a guarantee?
On every coaching program. Send 25 relevant applications inside sixty days without landing an interview and the work continues at no additional cost until interviews arrive. Document packages carry an edit window instead: 30 days on the standard tiers, 60 on the executive tier, with no revision count and no charge per round.
We are cutting roles in Columbus. Do you handle the employer side?
Yes, priced separately. Employers hold a quarterly pool of transition seats from $650 a seat and refer people into it as needed. Anyone referred is working with a career expert inside three business days, and a utilization report arrives each quarter. Retail and insurance restructurings here move large groups at once, which makes this a recurring need. The full economics are published on the outplacement page.

Legacy Careers LLC provides career coaching and resume writing services to professionals in Columbus, Ohio and across central Ohio, and in all 50 states. Columbus clients come from the insurance carriers and banking operations that make this one of the largest financial services employment centres in the Midwest, from the unusually dense cluster of retail and consumer brand headquarters, from the distribution, fulfilment, and air cargo network built on a location within a day of half the country, from the hospital systems, the children's research hospital, and the private contract research institute, from the semiconductor, automotive, battery, and data centre investment reshaping the surrounding counties, and from the university and state government employers downtown. Documents are ATS-ready and written for one target role at one kind of employer, with a match report naming the titles a background genuinely reaches. Packages run $149 to $749, coaching $549 to $2,497, and the $25 audit returns a written PDF within 24 business hours.
Coverage spans Franklin County and the ring out to Delaware, Union, Licking, Fairfield, and Madison. Two things shape a search here that appear on no other page in this set. This metro is repricing: semiconductor, battery, and data centre investment has pulled wages upward in several sectors while the cost of living has not moved much, which makes your own salary history the least reliable reference point available to you. And the new plants hire in waves tied to construction and commissioning milestones that are announced publicly, so the candidates who read those announcements are in front of the next wave months before the postings appear. The documents get built against a standard set on the hiring side across 2,500 placement decisions, and applied before anything is released.
