Career Coach New York City · Resume Writing New York posts the salary range. Most people still guess.

State law requires a good-faith range on the posting, so the number you would once have guessed at is printed before you apply. Almost nobody uses it. They anchor below the band, skip the question of where in the range the role is funded, and negotiate against a figure they invented. That is one fixable habit in the most competitive career market in the country. Every document is built by a firm founded by a hiring executive with 2,500 placement decisions behind him.

New York City

Career coaching and resume writing, for the hardest market.

Legacy Careers LLC provides career coaching and resume writing to professionals in New York City. The firm produces ATS-ready resumes, cover letters, match reports, LinkedIn profiles, and professional bios, and coaches clients through interviews, search strategy, networking, and salary negotiation, including how to negotiate against a posted range. Documents run $149 to $749 and coaching programs run $549 to $2,497, with a $25 resume audit as the entry point. The work targets the employers actually hiring across the metro: the banks, asset managers, and private capital firms in Midtown and downtown, the networks, agencies, and publishers that still concentrate here, the academic medical centres and health systems that are among the largest private employers in the state, the technology offices and startups spread from Chelsea to Brooklyn, the real estate, legal, and professional services base, and the retail, fashion, and hospitality industries the city is known for. Across completed engagements 87% of clients accept an offer, in 58 days on average, against an industry norm of 120 to 180 days. The bar every file clears was written on the hiring side across 2,500 placement decisions.

The firm is based in Houston and every engagement runs virtually. That changes nothing about the local work: the target list, the employer landscape, and the conventions your documents follow are New York specific, and those conventions differ by industry here more sharply than in any other market. Deliverables and prices sit on resume writing services, session detail on career coaching programs, and employer seat pools on corporate outplacement.

The Sector Map

Who actually hires in New York, and what each one reads for.

Six landscapes, each with its own resume conventions, and they differ from one another more sharply here than in any other American market. Your document belongs to one of them.

Financial services

Investment banking, sales and trading, asset and wealth management, private equity and credit, insurance, and the risk, compliance, and operations layer beneath all of it. This sector reads for pedigree first and deal or product specificity second: the transactions you worked, the products you covered, the desk you sat on, the licences you hold. A resume without a deal list or a product list reads as generic here in a way it does not in any other American market.

Media, advertising, and publishing

Networks, streaming, agencies, publishers, public relations, and the creative and production workforce around them. Titles inflate freely in this sector and hiring managers know it, so they read past the title to the accounts held, the budgets run, the shows or titles shipped, and the audience or revenue numbers behind them. Much of the work is project or contract based, which makes a continuous career look fragmented unless it is grouped deliberately.

Healthcare and life sciences

Academic medical centres, several very large health systems that rank among the biggest private employers in the state, research institutes, and a growing biotech and medical device footprint. Hiring runs far past clinical into revenue cycle, informatics, supply chain, quality, compliance, and research administration. Licensure and regulatory vocabulary screen before anything else, and this is the steadiest sector in a city whose other industries move in cycles.

Technology

Large engineering and sales offices for the national platforms, financial technology built on the banking base, advertising technology built on the agency base, e-commerce, health technology, and a deep startup layer. New York technology hiring is more commercially minded than the West Coast: panels read for what shipped and what it earned, and product, sales engineering, and operations roles carry more weight here relative to pure engineering than they do elsewhere.

Real estate, legal, and professional services

Commercial and residential real estate, development and construction, the largest legal market in the world, the accounting and consulting firms, and the advisory businesses attached to them. Panels read for deal or matter scale, jurisdictions and admissions, square footage or asset value carried, and client exposure. Bar admission, licences, and firm tier are applied as filters before your experience is read at all.

Retail, fashion, and hospitality

Fashion houses and retail headquarters, buying and merchandising organisations, restaurants, hotels, and the arts, museum, and nonprofit sector that no other American city carries at this scale. Buying and merchandising in particular read for open-to-buy managed, category volume, margin and markdown performance, and vendor negotiation, which candidates routinely describe as trend work rather than as the commercial function it is.

Compensation

What New York pays for, and how to use the posted range.

This is the one market where the employer has already told you the number. State law requires a good-faith range on the posting, and almost nobody uses it properly. Six things decide what you can credibly ask for here.

Your range is not a number you look up. It is a number you build from the roles you are actually pursuing, and then defend in a room with someone who already knows what the job is worth.
01

Start from the posted range, not from a guess

New York State requires employers to publish a good-faith salary range, which removes the guesswork that dominates every other market on this site. Read it before you apply, use it to disqualify roles that cannot pay you, and when the recruiter asks your expectations, answer inside the posted band rather than under it. Candidates routinely name a number below the floor of a range that was printed in front of them.

Built per client
02

Base is only part of the package here

Ask which part of the range the role is actually funded at, because a posted band is often wide and the hiring manager knows exactly where in it they intend to land. Beyond base the components differ sharply by sector: discretionary bonus that can exceed base in finance, equity and refresh policy in technology, union scale in parts of media and production, commission in real estate and sales, and shift differential across the health systems.

The whole offer
03

The expectations question comes early

Even with a range published, the recruiter will still ask what you are looking for, and the answer is not the top of the band by reflex. It is a number inside the band that you can justify with scope, delivered in a sentence that invites them to tell you where the role sits. That gets built and rehearsed in coaching, because the first thirty seconds of that call decides several years of earnings.

Coaching · before the screen
04

Cost of living cuts both ways

New York City levies its own income tax on top of state tax, which no other market in this set does, so an offer here and an identical offer in New Jersey or Connecticut are genuinely different amounts of money. Add the commute, which for many people is a four-figure annual cost in rail or subway fares. None of that is a reason not to work here. All of it belongs in the comparison before you sign.

Relocation · both directions
05

The cycle sets the leverage

This city has a hiring rhythm the rest of the country does not. Bonuses pay in the first quarter and a wave of finance and consulting resignations follows immediately, which opens roles and also floods them with candidates. Agencies hire against new business wins. Retail hires against the calendar. Healthcare is steady throughout. Knowing which wave you are moving with tells you whether to push in January or wait.

Timing · honestly
06

The document sets the ceiling

The band is largely settled before anyone speaks to you. A panel forms its view in the top third of your resume and opens accordingly, and in a stack several hundred deep that judgement is made in seconds and never revisited. A page that presents you a level below your real scope produces offers a level below it, and no amount of skill in the final conversation recovers the gap.

Where it really starts

No salary figures are published on this page because the employers publish their own ranges and those beat anything we could estimate. Ranges are built per client from live target roles. Placement rate and time to offer are measured across completed engagements and defined at the bottom of this page.

The Map

Where the jobs actually sit, and what that costs you.

Eight hiring districts across three states, stitched together by the largest transit system in the country. Which trains you will actually take narrows the target list more than any other single decision.

Midtown

Banking, law, corporate headquarters, media, and the professional services firms serving them. The densest concentration of white-collar employment in the country and the best connected point in the region, reachable from three states without a car. In-office expectations here run higher than downtown or Brooklyn, and the pace signal on your resume matters more than it does anywhere else in the metro.

Lower Manhattan and the Financial District

Banks, insurers, financial technology, city and federal government, and the firms that stayed downtown after the industry spread out. Rents pushed a wide mix of employers into this district, so it now holds startups and agencies alongside the institutions. Commutes work from Brooklyn and New Jersey particularly well, which quietly widens the candidate pool for every posting here.

Hudson Yards, Chelsea, and Flatiron

Technology offices, agencies, media, and the corporate headquarters that moved west over the past decade. This is where New York technology hiring is concentrated, and the culture reads younger and less formal than Midtown while the screening rigour does not drop at all. Product, growth, and commercial roles outnumber pure engineering roles here.

Brooklyn: Downtown, DUMBO, and Industry City

Technology and creative studios, healthcare, higher education, light manufacturing, and the food and hospitality economy. Employers are smaller than in Manhattan, hiring chains are short, and referrals move faster than applications. For anyone living in the borough it is a far better radius than Midtown, and it is consistently underweighted by candidates who default their search to Manhattan.

Long Island City, Astoria, and western Queens

Media production and post, healthcare, corporate back office and operations, logistics, and the industrial base along the waterfront. One subway stop from Midtown and priced nothing like it, which is why so many operations and support functions relocated here. Shift work is common across the healthcare and logistics employers and pay reflects it.

The hospital corridor and Upper Manhattan

Academic medical centres, teaching hospitals, universities, research institutes, and the foundation and nonprofit sector clustered around them, running from the Upper East Side up through Washington Heights and into the Bronx. Credentialing vocabulary matters here as much as the experience underneath it, and hiring cycles are slower and more committee-driven than anywhere else in the city.

New Jersey: Jersey City, Hoboken, and Newark

Financial operations and technology, insurance, pharmaceutical headquarters out along the corridor, logistics, and the port. A PATH ride from Manhattan and a different tax picture, which is a genuine part of the offer comparison. Plenty of New York careers are built entirely on this side of the river, and candidates who exclude it are cutting their target list substantially for no good reason.

Westchester, Stamford, and Nassau

Corporate headquarters, financial services, healthcare systems, and aerospace and defense out on the Island. Commuter rail defines what is reachable, and reverse commuting from the city is common and underused. Compensation philosophy in the suburbs sits closer to national corporate norms than Manhattan does, which matters when you are comparing two offers that look similar on paper.

Tell us the radius you will actually drive and the target list gets built inside it. A list full of roles you would decline is not a search, it is a way to feel busy while nothing moves.

The Local Read

How a New York panel reads you.

Five things that are true here specifically, in the order they hit your application.

  1. 1

The system reads you before a person does.

The banks, the health systems, and the large employers here all screen at volume, and volume in this market means several hundred applications for a single posting within a day or two. What fails at this stage is mechanical rather than a judgement about you: layouts that scramble on parse, headings a parser does not recognise, dates read as blank, and keyword coverage that does not match the posting. You are never told it happened.

    Gate one
  2. 2

Pedigree is a real filter, and there is a way past it.

Firm tier and school carry more weight here than in any other American market, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. What works is not disguising the gap but outranking it on evidence: leading with outcomes, naming deals, accounts, products, or volumes early, and letting specificity do what a brand name would have done. A candidate from outside the target set who states results in the first four lines beats a pedigreed one who lists responsibilities.

    Gate two
  3. 3

Most industries here expect an artifact, not just a resume.

Bankers carry a deal sheet. Creatives carry a book or a reel. Writers carry clips. Buyers carry a line list. Engineers carry a repository or a shipped product. In New York the resume opens the door and the artifact closes it, and candidates who arrive with only the resume look unprepared next to peers who brought both. If your industry has one, it gets built alongside the documents rather than after the fact.

    Gate three
  4. 4

Credentials and clearance are applied before the read.

A Series 7 or 63, a CFA, a CPA, bar admission and the states you are admitted in, a clinical licence, a PMP, or a union card in parts of media is treated as a filter rather than as a credit. Each belongs where a scanner catches it in the first ten seconds, with the status and date stated. In the regulated employers across this city a blank space is read as a no rather than as an omission.

    Gate four
  5. 5

Which trains you take is part of the decision.

Managers here know the difference between a forty-minute ride and a ninety-minute one with two transfers, and they have watched hires leave over it. If you are applying across boroughs or from New Jersey or the suburbs, address it rather than leaving it to be inferred from an address line: name the line, say you have made the trip, or say you are moving. Silence gets filled with the unfavourable assumption.

    Gate five

The Difference

Everyone says they write better resumes.
Here is what better looks like in New York.

A New York panel settles two questions in about thirty seconds, working through a stack several hundred deep. What did this person actually run, and will they fix the problem I am hiring for? Nothing gets a second read here, so every bullet is rebuilt to answer one of the two in the first line, in the conventions that specific industry expects.

Investment banking · the deal list does the work
What was sent

Associate on the industrials team, building models and preparing materials for client presentations across a range of transactions.

What we wrote

Execution: Ran the model and diligence workstream on four closed sell-side processes in industrials, including a carve-out that required standalone financials, and drafted the management presentation used in every buyer meeting.

Why it works. Building models and preparing materials describes every associate in the city. Naming closed processes, the side of the trade, a carve-out that proves technical difficulty, and the specific document you owned turns a job description into a deal list, which is the only currency this sector reads in.

Agency account · past the inflated title
What was sent

Account director managing client relationships and leading cross-functional teams to deliver campaigns on time and on budget.

What we wrote

Account Leadership: Held a national retail account through a brand relaunch, growing billings across two cycles while running a team of nine and keeping the client through an agency review that unseated two competitors.

Why it works. On time and on budget is the floor, not the achievement, and account director means five different things across five agencies. Billings held and grown, team size, and surviving a competitive review are the three facts an agency panel actually screens on, because they prove the account was retained rather than merely serviced.

Retail buying · a commercial job, described as a creative one
What was sent

Buyer responsible for selecting product assortments, working with vendors, and supporting the merchandising strategy for the category.

What we wrote

Category Buying: Owned open-to-buy for a category through two seasons, improving full-price sell-through while holding markdown below plan and renegotiating terms with three vendors ahead of a cost increase.

Why it works. Selecting assortments makes buying sound like taste. It is a profit-and-loss job. Open-to-buy owned, sell-through, markdown against plan, and vendor terms renegotiated are the numbers a merchandising panel reads, and they also let a buyer compete for planning, sourcing, and general commercial roles outside retail entirely.

Every rewrite above is built from facts the candidate already had. Nothing is invented, because in a market this concentrated the person interviewing you may well have worked the same deal, pitched the same account, or bought the same category.

Before You Buy

Ten questions, answered for New York.

Cost, speed, coverage across three states, and the questions the most competitive market in the country asks that others never do.

Do you meet clients in person in New York?

No. Every engagement runs virtually, which most New Yorkers prefer anyway. The standard is identical whether you are in Midtown, Brooklyn, Jersey City, or up in Westchester. What is local is the target list, the employer landscape, and the vocabulary your documents are written in.

Does a New York resume actually need to be different?

The framework holds everywhere. The conventions do not, and they differ more sharply by industry here than in any other market. A banking resume carries a deal list, a creative resume points to a reel or a book, a tech resume leads with shipped product, and a hospital resume leads with licensure. Sending one general version into all four is why people hear nothing back.

Employers have to post the salary range now. How do I use that?

Better than most candidates do. New York State requires a good-faith range on postings, which means the number you would once have guessed at is printed before you apply. Use it to disqualify roles early, to anchor your own answer inside the posted band rather than below it, and to ask which part of the range the role is actually funded at, which is the question almost nobody asks.

There are hundreds of applicants for every role. How do I get read?

By making the top third do the work. In this market a posting can collect several hundred applications in a day, and the first pass is fast and unsentimental. What survives it is a page that answers where you sit and what you fixed inside the first few lines, in the vocabulary of that specific industry, rather than a full history the reader never reaches.

What does it cost, and how fast do I get it?

The $25 resume audit is the entry point and comes back as a written PDF inside 24 business hours. Documents are $149, $299, and $749. Coaching is $549, $1,197, and $2,497. Standard build is 3 to 5 business days and expedited is 1 to 2. Klarna and Afterpay are available at checkout on all of it.

Do you cover the boroughs and the tri-state commute?

Yes. All five boroughs, plus Jersey City, Hoboken, Newark, and the Gold Coast, Yonkers, White Plains, New Rochelle, and Stamford, and Nassau County out on the Island. The commute you will genuinely make narrows the target list more than any other single answer, so tell us which trains you are willing to take.

How do I work out what to ask for here?

Start from the posted range, then value the rest. In finance, bonus can exceed base and is discretionary rather than promised. In technology, equity and refresh policy matter more than the salary line. In media and the agencies, title inflation is real and the range attached to it is not. New York City also levies its own income tax on top of state tax, which changes what an offer is actually worth against one from outside the city.

Who actually writes my documents?

A Legacy Careers writer working to a written standard rather than to taste, and nothing is released until someone who has genuinely made hiring decisions has read it against that standard. The firm operates from Houston, works with New York clients virtually, and was founded by an executive with 12+ years on the hiring side and 2,500+ placement calls behind him.

Is there a guarantee?

On every coaching program. Send 25 relevant applications inside sixty days without landing an interview and the work continues at no additional cost until interviews arrive. Document packages carry an edit window instead: 30 days on the standard tiers, 60 on the executive tier, with no revision count and no charge per round.

We are cutting roles in New York. Do you handle the employer side?

Yes, priced separately. Employers hold a quarterly pool of transition seats from $650 a seat and refer people into it as needed. Anyone referred is working with a career expert inside three business days, and a utilization report arrives each quarter. The full economics are published on the outplacement page.

Something not covered here?

Coverage

New York, and every other market.

Legacy Careers LLC provides career coaching and resume writing services to professionals in New York City and in all 50 states. New York clients come from the banks, asset managers, and private capital firms of Midtown and downtown, from the networks, agencies, and publishers concentrated here, from the academic medical centres and health systems that rank among the largest private employers in the state, from the technology offices and startups running from Chelsea into Brooklyn, from the real estate, legal, and professional services base, and from the retail, fashion, hospitality, and arts industries no other American city carries at this scale. Documents are ATS-ready and written for one target role at one kind of employer, with a match report naming the titles a background genuinely reaches. Packages run $149 to $749, coaching $549 to $2,497, and the $25 audit returns a written PDF within 24 business hours.

Coverage spans all five boroughs, northern New Jersey, Westchester, southern Connecticut, and Nassau County. Two things shape a search here more than anywhere else. Employers must publish a salary range, which turns compensation from a guessing game into a reading exercise most candidates never do. And the conventions differ by industry so sharply that a banking document and a creative document have almost nothing structurally in common, which is why nothing here is written to be sent everywhere. The standard behind the work does not change: it was set on the hiring side across 2,500 placement decisions and applied to every file before release.
